I know EE does not come with a good solution for managing files and uploads.  But how well do you think EE would handle the following project.

Web Community Site with the following features:

    Blog
Moderated Article Posts from community members
Moderated File Uploads from community members
Moderated Video Posts from community members (probably from YouTube/Vimeo rather than hosted)
Forum (same login as other features)
Moderation done by admin and select individuals

I know EE has no problem with the blog and probably moderated articles, the files and videos are where I am concerned.  I am also concerned about how EE does not use Post Title in the URL of the thread.

I would have three weblogs: Articles, Files, and Videos. I would then assign all three a custom status group consisting of Published and In Moderation. The default choice would obviously be In Moderation.

The File weblog could have a field for the file location and a field for a description.

The Video weblog could have a field for holding the video embed code. Look at the wiki article on embedding YouTube videos.

The video one I don’t think will be difficult, the file one I am more concerned about.  I don’t want to use a URL as it could be maliciously changed after moderation.  I will likely want to host the files myself to avoid this problem after they are approved.

Is there a good module that handles file upload and storage?  I believe this is currently one of EE’s weaknesses.

Anyone know if EE 2.x will support files and images uploading and storage better?  Also, if they are going to change the forums code to put the post title into the URL?

I have most likely misunderstood you there, but EE does actually use the post title in the URL!

    Not with the forums module.

I have a site that does what you discribe.

    > Blog
    EE can do a blog

    > Moderated Article Posts from community members
You can use a Stand Alone Entry Form (SAEF) that lets members submit a weblog entry.  You can set the status in the SAEF or simply select the default status to “pending” or something in the weblog options.

    > Moderated File Uploads from community members
This is a bit more tricky, and is a weakness of EE.  Do a search for LG SAEF File Upload, it might do what you want….

    > Moderated Video Posts from community members (probably from YouTube/Vimeo rather than hosted)
SAEF again, but have a field as a URL link.  You can then have some PHP that detects if it’s a youtube or vimeo url and extract the video from that information.  Would have to be manually moderated to stop people posting garbage links though.

    > Forum (same login as other features)
    Built into EE

    > Moderation done by admin and select individuals
Member groups with different permissions is built into EE.

Apparently this forum does, so if it’s not originally supported then perhaps there is a modification that can achieve the same effect?

I am extremely sorry, my tired head was fooling me! Sorry, again, obviously the forum module doesn’t use titles in URLs. How other forum softwares solve it is by use of extensions and plug-ins. Search around for forum plug-ins that can do the job, perhaps there might be some.

    There are none.

Although, I know of a few high performance forums that do this without problems.  In fact, they take it considerably further than that as well.
