Sorry for posting this here. I thought it maybe better than doing separate posts in Plugins, Extensions, and other areas. Besides, I’m not looking for technical detail, specifically.

I’m just wondering if anyone who has created a plugin or extension, ever modify the titles table in EE. I know that some modules do, I was just uncertain if a field could be added to the titles database, then supported thru out the system, like a data_type field if it was required on ALL entries, but you didn’t want to have to create 5 or 6 different fields for different data structures like book vs press release, etc.

Don’t know if I will be able to help on this one at all but could you possibly explain more about what you need to do to the title? I’m a little fuzzy on what it is that you need. Do you have a real-world example of something that you need to do at all?

It’s basically this, if you have a field called fund that technically covers every title published, regardless of section. Currently this is handled via a custom field, but then for each section, the field is actually titled section_fund (i.e. book_fund, news_fund, etc. So we end up with 12 different fund fields instead a single one. Thins makes searching more complicated.

The idea I was mentally exploring, is what if the field was instead added to exp.weblogs_title; then its the same field across the board, but how do you get it to function as other fields. I’ve seen extensions add functionality to weblogs_title; say the limit by author function. I’ve seen extensions add functionality to custom fields (Mark Hout’s), but I’ve never seen an extension add functionality by adding a custom field to titles. So I was wondering if anyone had ever done it? With the possible follow-up of what gotchas should be made aware of.
