This is always a tricky issue for EE developers (Rick and crew), and those who develop sites in EE. Pre announcing much is not a good practice. Hopes rise and then fall with each subsequent non release of the expected new release. Little teasers here and there are important, but should be kept at an absolute minimum, if even released at all. When EE 2.0 is ready, bang the drums, blow the horns, then release it to those who develop EE plugins, modules, extensions, etc., then, 30 days later, release it to all. I don’t even mind a ‘preview release’ which runs for a month or so to help iron out bugs and whet the appetite at the same time. What gets under everyone’s skin, probably everyone, is teaser tidbits that imply “2.0 is coming soon, 2.0 is coming soon” only to be followed by months of non release, then an official delay from an estimated target date. If it’s ready, let’s see it. If it’s not, lets not talk too much about it until it’s ready (private conversations and preview releases between EE developers, and EE plugin, module, and extension developers notwithstanding).
That said, I’m ready!!!

and two years since EE 2.0 was coming “real soon now” (the death of EE 1.x being announced and all). First things first: Wonder if EE 2.0 will be released, then about what it will come with.
Brendon, I’ve known you for many years, and had lots of conversations with you in that time, and i’ve always found your passive/aggressive nature perplexing. You, more then most, know how accessible we are and how willing I am personally to engage in conversations about the state EE or anything else on your mind. Despite that, you seem to need to get your undies in a bunch periodically. Is it alcohol? I’m asking seriously, do you get drunk sometimes before you visit our forums?

But that was from the 26th of last month, and didn’t really say much in the first place, so wouldn’t really count it as either an “update” or as “regular” (Sorry Leslie).
Christopher, come on, this is just the 6th of this month; that last update was the Friday before last, less than two weeks ago. Whether or not the update is substantial to you is certainly a personal opinion. Again, I’m not sure what your expectations are for the information we include in updates. Do you really want the boring details of which controllers, libraries, and queries we’ve constructed?
Sorry, I berate someone for tone, then get berated for tone. Ha!
I’m not looking for daily updates, but weekly wouldn’t be out of the question. I guess without a definition of “regular” I honestly don’t know how often I should be checking. I am sure I’m not alone in checking daily, and I don’t even plan to upgrade immediately.
And as to content, the “boring details of which controllers, libraries, and queries we’ve constructed” would be above my head, but I might enjoy reading about them (call me a sadist).
My expectations to updates would include a bit of meat about what’s actually being worked on. Saying “For the curious, the dev team is currently working on module conversion and testing” doesn’t really give me much to go on. I understand it’s a fine balance between revealing features of 2.0 and telling people what’s actually being worked on, but I don’t think it’s unfair to say that people are curious about what 2.0 will do for them, what’s left to make this happen, how close you feel you are, etc. Hell, reading the build logs of 1.6.x is often beyond me, but I still do (when they come out).
A post that points out the unexpected difficulties being faced would be helpful in understanding the delay. Even without going into unannounced features. I’m sure the port of 1.6.4 features didn’t all go smoothly. So tell people why the update isn’t just easy.
I really do have faith in you guys, am still positive for the platform, still recommend it to anyone that will listen, and do plan on upgrading as soon as my finances allow.
But since you asked, what I would really like to see is something like this: John Knack on Adobe. Informative, often above my head, and always an interesting read.

Rick, I get intoxicated by visiting the forums. There’s just so much to drink in…

So does that mean EE 2.0 will come with a beer?
If not, can we put this on the feature request

Hi Christopher,
I’m trying to get community updates (this is not necessarily 2.0 news) out once a week with a more detailed 2.0 update once a month, which means we’re due for one in the very near future. We did a demo at the EE Roadshow and that threw our blog schedule off a bit. That schedule is about all time allows.
I tentatively plan to discuss what Allard talked about at the Roadshow, namely Strict URLs.

If we can reach 100% agreement on the type of beer it should come with….

What a question! It’s not alcohol—it only seems that way because of the aggression (don’t see the passivity argument, though), and the hour. On the aggression, touché. I am a lawyer, and word-based aggression is our stock in trade. But to be fair to an apparent drunk, I’m posting from the Republic of Korea, where it’s not yet lunchtime. I’m not usually drunk until at least 2:00 p.m. But usually never—I don’t have much of a taste for alcohol. Just software.
I agree with Chris Christopher Jorgenson’s recommendation earlier in this thread on how to communicate project status to the masses of impatient, possibly-drunk customers queuing to pay for EE 2.0.

I love when people agree with me.
And if we need to start checking blood alcohol levels before posting, can someone please just make it so I can’t post between the hours of 8 pm and 2 am? Or would this be a feature request?
And no big deal Brandon, but I haven’t gone by Chris since I was like 12. I prefer Christopher. Just weird for me to read anything else.
[Update:] And it’s “en,” not “on.” Heh.

My own name is “on”, not “en”, so I know how that can rankle. Sorry.

Sure, make me feel bad. Actually, I felt bad when I made the post. Obviously not enough to keep me from doing it though.
I did get a bit frustrating after reading, “If Rick and Allard talk about new 2.0 info at the Roadshow we will be sure and share it here on the blog for you next week as well,” and then seeing no updates! During the SXSW there was a lot to pay attention to, drool over, etc. Since, not a lot to get a fanboy excited.
Change week to day, and month to week in your comment, and I’ll be really happy!
I know, I was teasing.

No worries. Wouldn’t I feel like like an ass if I got it wrong!
And if it hasn’t come through, I think most people, and if not most, at least some, do appreciate your criticism. The part that set me off was refering to the EE team as perfectionists. I actually would prefer they are this. It came across as a bit insulting. And you can review my posts in these forums and know this is a kettle/pot comment.
What people intend, and how it’s perceived are too different things. I often try hard to be clever and fail miserably.

Well, I’m going to throw in my two pennies worth here. I’m voting for Budweiser, but I’m not much of a beer drinker.
#30 / Oct 07, 2008 5:16am
I am tempted to vote for anything but Budweiser. (Unless you don’t mean the Anheuser-Busch stuff but the Czech original from Budvar, which is actually rather decent when on tap.)
