I just don’t get it… I mean what is it in 2.0 that has everyone in a fit? The feature set is the same as far as we know it. The only thing that appears to be different is the foundation (CI) and the control panel (big deal). We know from statements from the EllisLab folk that there is no full e-commerce product and that was one of the more anticipated or desired pieces of functionality. And we know that for anyone that purchases 1.6 today they will be able to upgrade to 2.0 for the difference. And we know the tagging mechanism that we all know and love is not changing either…

And from my point of view I learn about functionality in 1.6 that I have not used every day…

So what am I missing. Why are some of you so excited about the 2.0 release…

It’s ExpressionEngine 😉!  They have tricks up their sleeves with details they haven’t released yet.

After personally seeing the new control panel at the EE Roadshow I think that is one of the best updates to me personally. It just looks smooth and professional. As Derek Allard, “It’s sexy as hell”.

I’m with you on this one, Marcus. I’m excited for 2.0’s potential - but I don’t understand it the fervor either. 1.6.4 is keeping me very busy right now.

I think we all have hopes that EE2 will implement many of our long-standing feature requests…more robust membership where one can belong to multiple groups, etc. And that CI will attract more developers.

If it’s all just CI and cosmetics I’ll be rather disappointed.

Well I definitely understand the benefit of having a pool of developers to draw from.

From a developer’s perspective, EE 2 will transition from a CMS for building websites to a platform for building web applications. The existing EE community may benefit a little from a few new third party modules, but Ellislab will benefit most from a whole new category of customers.

I very briefly looked at creating modules for the current EE, saw global variables, felt queezy, and turned the page as quickly as possible.

And that is exactly what it will take for EE to take off in a huge way. Extensions and widgets for EE make me giddy…

Oh and did I mention templates?  😉

I’m mostly excited about it because I’m hoping CI will allow many more third party modules/plugins to be developed for EE—however, I most likely won’t be an early adopter.

I highly recommend EE for most professional projects, but the lack of modules/plugins is why I often still use wordpress for blog sites, as painful as it is to customize the templates.

Lack of modules/plugins? I don’t see that at all. If there are fewer plugins than for WP, this is true, but EE offers much more core functionality right from the start.

Ingmar, I agree… WP isn’t a CMS from the get-go. It’s a Blog. So happy with EE. I tried to learn WP but the functionality wasn’t really there compared to EE, even though it’s free. The mailing list in EE is a HUGE plus over WP…

I phrased my statement poorly.

I love EE and all things being equal would use it over WP everytime. It’s just much better to use. But here are a few examples of Wordpress plugins I haven’t found equivalents for in EE (and they’re all free), and tilt the scales towards WP in some cases. I’m hoping CI will make it more likely that we’ll see some of these on EE.

SMS Text management, broken links remover, smartlinker/internal linker (automatically links defined words to a specific internal page), easier sitemaps/feeds, picassa integration, bot tracker, inbound link tracker, search engine related posts (posts related to the search term used to find the site/page), a number of (free) entry rating plugins, a huge selection of SEO tools, AJAX everything…

CI might make those items available but it will not make them free.

Will be up to the CI developer if free or not. But, if too many things are paid extras like the Forum, that will be a problem. As far as I’m concerned anyway.
