Yes Clive, I’m also interested in trying EngineHosting and have already recommended it as an option to this particular client should he want to move or try something new out for one of his sites.

By the way, one other thing I noticed that improved performance. When you create a database in the GoDaddy control panel you have the option of allowing external access or not. The db’s that have external access permissions are hosted on a separate server.

Initially I allowed external access as we were going to need to move the site from a test domain to the live domain. However this proved to be another performance bottleneck, albeit only during certain busier times of the day. Once I had created a new database with no external access response times were much faster around the clock.

    Thanks again,
    Luke

Luke, thanks for uncovering and sharing another part of the mystery - am sure it’ll be useful to many.

I’m personally glad to know it, because I was just considering to set up external access for a convenience. Sounds like better to take the few moments to log in through GoDaddy’s arcane setup. It does work 😉.

On the EngineHosting direction, I had a chance recently to look a little farther into some of the matters discussed with Nevin in past times - added further to the confidence there.

    Regards again,
    Clive

We ended up moving our hosting for some clients off of godaddy because of inconsistent performance.  Another budget host that is much better is hostgator.  We have one site running on that and, really, it loads as fast as a static website does.  Worth a shot if GoDaddy keeps giving you problems.

Good to hear a vote there too, Phire, especially that you think they’re dependably fast. I guess the thing about Hostgator, Bluehost/Hostmonster, etc. is that they actually charge about twice as much unless in a long term contract, and some customers by tendency or toe-dipping experience kind of stick on the lower prices.

Want to say, I really enjoy your recent work on Pitney-Bowes, just the one example I could look at this morning.

It feels to put recent discussions about information design into a good perspective. Even while remembering again that all customers may not go for a given kind of approach, it’s great to see an example that reminds we—and they—have places to head for.

    Regards,
    Clive
