    Hi,

I’m experiencing a strange issue in regards to character encodings - the site renders fine, but the Control Panel is showing some weird characters instead. See the attached screenshots for more info…

The encoding on the front-end is indeed UTF-8 (in a meta tag), and the “Automatically Convert High ASCII Text to Entities” setting is set to “Yes”. The field I’m entering the data into is set to be “Xhtml” encoded.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Michael

Michael, how did you get the content in there originally?

It was copy-pasted from Word. Strange thing is that it works in the dev environment as expected, works on the production front-end but not in the production back-end.

You generally don’t need them together, ie no need to convert entities when using utf-8. That said, I suspect that the backend is simply using a different encoding. The meta tag on the frontend, has it utf-8 hardcoded, or are you using an EE variable?

I’ve hard-coded the UTF-8 meta tag in the front-end. The CP is set to use UTF-8 though, so both should be working. I checked on the CP - it’s also using a meta tag with UTF-8 in it… Still stuck on this one!

The data looks like UTF-8 alright, but it’s display in iso-8859-1. When you edit and re-save the troublesome article, does that change anything?

No change unfortunately. When I click the Update button, it shows correctly on the ‘View Entry’ page (the confirmation page), but whenever the ‘Edit Entry’ form is shown, the characters display incorrectly.

Well, perhaps it’s time I took a look myself, if you permit. I’ll send you an email.
