I had my website designed for me by a design firm in expression engine. I really like it, but now I want hire another html developer to help me update certain parts of the website. Essentially I wish to give them access to the whole site but without the ability to do admin things like create/delete members and change passwords or mess with other important high-level architecture. What are the steps I can take (literally) to create a new member profile with a new password like this? Or do you suggest another approach? Any tips on how to limit risk when hiring a new developer?

    Thanks!

If you have a developer working on your site, it is really not feasible to grant him anything but full Superadmin access.

They probably have FTP access (so they know MySQL password) or the db itself (so they can make any user Suepradmin, if they so chose). Once your setup is complete, you can, of course, have various user groups with varying levels of permission, but during development my suggestion would be to hire somebody you trust, and ask them not to do any of these changes or have them run by you.

And Backup everything before they start and at the end of each day while they are working on it that way you will always have a way of getting your site rebuilt if it wll goes horribly wrong. Use phpMyAdmin to back up the database and an ftp programme to back up the files. I date my files using a naming convention of year month day name and file them away in a backup folder for the domain my desktop computer - rather than on the server.

    So I would have:
    20080929.sql.zip
    20080929.files.zip

Some ftp programes allow your to set up an automated backup but I am not sure about doing automatic backups of MySql - anyone here have any ideas?

All depends on your server really but most do allow for you to run a cron job so you should be able to automate it in that way. Some control panels also have an automated database backup utility as well that will allow you to send the file to yourself at a specified date and time. Might ask your host about those as they would know best on that though.

    Best wishes,

Just noticed this thread was sitting in The Lounge… I think it’s more of a “General” EE theme, actually, so I moved it.

Of course! I always forget CRON as I had a terrible time getting it to run with Movable Type properly.
