I am running 1.6.4 and after creating a new template in an existing template group I tried to save it as a file for external editing and I got the following error:

Unable to save your template as a text file

I have created and saved scores of other pages this way. This is the first time I have encountered this problem.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Forrest

I’d check the permissions of the folder.

Another problem I sometimes get is if I create the file myself before doing the save process.  EE won’t be able to save to that file, it needs to create it first.

    Can’t think of anything else…

The permissions were set at 755 so I changed them to 777 but still have the same issue. I have had the nasty experience of trying to create them in backwards order, so I have been creating them as new templates in the Control Panel are and then when I open them trying to save them as files.

Make sure you have something in the template, even if it is just something link coming soon.

I have many lines of text. Any other possibilities?

try creating a new one following these steps:

    1) pick a template group that is different than the one your using now
    2) make sure the file doesn’t already exist
    3) open the template in EE, click save to file, and save

see if that works, if it does then we know it is a problem with one of the above… if not then I don’t know…

Phire_SK’s suggestions should work. I’d just add to put in this is a test or something similar. 😊

I tried the three step process and still fail to save the files. I am checking with EE Hosting to see if there may be something wrong with the path. Thanks.

EngineHosting doesn’t require you to use 777, in their case 755 works.

Where in relationship to your root directory is your editing folder?

Mine is in the same directory as my path.php file.

Sue, per the instructions here, I have mine inside the system folder. I originally had it set to 755 (which worked before) but changed it to 777 to see if that would help. I can try moving it to the root directory and see if that makes a difference.

    Can you resave older templates?

No. That has changed as well.

    Forrest:

Can you verify that the “Basepath to Template File Directory” is correct in:  CP Home ›  Templates ›  Template Preferences

If you’re using MediaTemple, the trick is to turn off PHP’s Safe Mode.  On a dv server this is easy.  Not sure if its possible on a gs server.

    Thanks for the feedback, bdewoody.

Forrest, is this still a problem?
