Have you moved away from 800x600 designs?

    Hello people,
I just curious to see for what resolutions do you guys design these days?
Personally, I am fan of flexible/fluid designs but more than often my opinions don’t matter in a real world.

When it comes to ‘fixed width’ designs I tend to lean (still) towards 800x600 resolution with centered content…what about you and your experiences wit clients?

Thanks for sharing and discussing this old topic!

960 all the way for me, largely because of the theory behind the 960 grid system. Makes things so much easier. Also depends on the site of course, but 960 width is the norm for us.

Generally I build for 1024x798 monitors. 96.5% of my visitors have a resolution at least that high.

    Thanks Andy and soxhead,
I agree that days of 800 are long gone and just trying to teach an old dog… 😊...perhaps some sites that provide video drivers would require this low res and size of design but other than that.
960 does provide nice feeling of ‘paper on screen’.
Thanks again for dropping a note, time appreciated.

I’m working on my *ahem* 4th site ever, and they have all been 960 so far.

I moved beyond that, what 2-3 years ago maybe, not sure.
The thing is most designs have plenty of chrome around the edges so the content still really runs within the 800 pixel realm, right down the middle. I center the wrap div using margin: 0 auto; normally.
I’ve rarely had any complaints, except maybe people trying to print the backgrounds, but most browsers shrink to fit the paper now, with a print stylesheet it could be remedied better too.

Switched my target to 1024px a couple years ago but always try to use liquid layouts (or fixed/fluid) that work from 800 on up. Nothing bugs me more than fixed width centered on the screen - Sorry everyone, fixed/fluid isn’t that hard. 😊

Well myself personally I design each project to whatever it requires. If that means a fixed, centred layout then I will do that, if it means a fluid layout then I will do that instead.

I don’t believe that there is a right or wrong way to size a site as there will always be someone (not aimed at yourself PXLated) who has a screen that is either really small or just waaaaaaay too large.

You have to design for the job at hand and do the best you can in all cases I believe.

    Best wishes,

Agree Mark, design to the job at hand. I just think that too many are locked into that easy to do fixed width and aren’t using their creativity and it all gets rather boring 😊

Totally agree with you on that one! The grid systems are good though in that they can help people to learn a lot more about CSS and design standards if they take the time to look into them. I even use them myself from time to time as they can help a lot with development lead times.

It definitely should come down to using the right method for the right site though and not just always design with what you know best, although of course that does help 😉

    Best wishes,

    Mark
