I’m working on a non-profit site at the moment (that is due uncomfortably soon, by the way) and the last item on my list is to recreate their credit card authorization system. They’re currently using the last web dev company’s propriety platform and processing service, so I won’t have anything to build off.

So the long and the short, i’m not really looking for a module or anything, i’m sure i can write up something custom if needed, but i’m looking for your experience. Who do you guys use? I’m pretty sure they don’t want to use PayPal, tho if there are no other good alternatives i’ll see if i can coax them into it. Authorize.net? I really don’t know anyone else as i’ve never done it before. Here’s to the best community on the web and I thank you all for your incoming assistance!

PayPal has a bad rep as an unserious payment gateway but they do it all and pretty well, too. Buyers don’t need a PayPal account. Check out their developer docs for more ideas on how you may be able to use them. I’m not a huge fan of PayPal, but I think they’re often overlooked or not considered just because of their name.

Hopefully some others will chime in with services they’ve used.

I depends on the level of donations you expect, and what you want to spend on that. Authorize.net and other cc processors are not exactly cheap, generally taking not only a cut of the payments but a fixed monthly fee as well. So, for small or medium sized sites, I’d definitely give PayPal another look. As Ryan said, no PayPal account needed for donors.

    How about Google checkout?

In theory, yes. In practice, not used widely enough just yet. Just my € 0.02.

Yeah thats true, one advantage I think it has though is that is has the Google brand behind it and people recognise that. But I agree its not used enough yet. The only implementation of it I have done is with Magento.

A lot depends on how they will want to handle their account. As they had a system in place then they may well have a business bank account and/or an internet business account whihc they would need for a payment gateway to work. If thats in place then all you need do is find a cart that works with their payment gateway. I would suggest Foxycart as its so slick but its gateways are still limited. I have just installed Roman Cart on a site - clunky back end interface but does the job.
