Is there an advantage or disadvantage to either format? Why do sites offer feeds in both formats? Is this like Beta vs VHS, Coke vs Pepsi, Mac vs PC?

I think if you dig deep enough you’ll find differences between the formats - but realistically/practically any feed reader worth its salt will accept both formats.
I used to worry about getting both formats published - these days not so much.

I have templates for both RSS 2.0 and Atom, but when presented with a request for a feed I give the Atom URL.
