Just a quick one this. Thought I’d brush up on my regex today but am having difficulty finding out how to type the hat (^) character using OSX (Leopard).

I can use the character palette to bring up what looks like the character but when it goes into a program for testing out regex patterns it doesn’t work. I have had to copy-paste the character each time from a tutorial on the net. The character that I am typing in using the character palette looks a lot larger and wider than the one I need.

    Anyone?

    Thanks.

    Best wishes,

Well I’m not on a Mac at the mo but when I was studying French the Alt characters came in handy:

I found this and I think the character you want is Alt 0136.

I don’t know whether that will work on a Mac but I found this too

    Hope this helps

    Hi Emily,

You beat me to the punch. Actually in the end I did find the character and according to the character palette in OSX it is a circumflex accent - Unicode 005E or UTF8: 5E.

Never been brilliant on weird characters me 😉 Found it under the punctuation tab in the character palette in the end though.

Thanks for the help though. Took a look at the second link you posted and it is quite correct that it is Shift-6 that places this character in so thanks for that. Actually I feel quite silly as it is actually printed on the key on my keyboard but I always thought that was the same as the one that I was originally pasting in (UP ARROWHEAD) which wasn’t working. 😊

    Best wishes,
