    quick question about MSM,

Other than the very nice interface, I can do everything that MSM can do using the old work around except set different site perfences per site?

Also, to keep things cleaner, I was thinking I could set up different logins that only showed templated groups relative to a particular domain. Any other suggetions when using the old method.

Last, does anyone with experience both have input?

    Thanks!!

In addition to not having separate site preferences, you also cannot set site-based member privileges, file upload areas, weblogs, categories, templates, etc. i.e. everything. 😉  The “old method” is just a way to have a different default template group when accessed via it’s index.php page.  There’s really no separation of settings or content, meaning that unless you go to extreme lengths of custom coding in your templates to try to mimic the behavior and separation.  Without this excessive effort, each site’s templates and content is accessible via all “sites”.  Further, there’s no support provided for the path.php-based method of running “separate” sites.

...but, couldn’t I set up weblogs, templates, categories that are only used for a particular site? it may be “accessible” for all sites, but it’s really not accessible unless links or content are displayed on those other site pages—correct?

One disadvantage to the older method is that if you know what the template group is for site#2, you can display it in site#1, or vise versa.
