On the home page of a news type site, the headlines will be sorted by importance NOT by topic (weblog or category in our world). It’s easy to set up a sort order but then how do I link an entry to the right template group and template? I chose to structure the site I’m working on with categories and subcategories. These correspond neatly with the template groups and templates (where applicable). I stupidly assumed that there would be a {category} variable within the {weblog:entries} pair. The template group is covered by {weblog}, but how do I make sure I direct the user to the right template within a group in a list not sorted by category or weblog?

I hope this makes sense. I’m tired and am increasingly frustrated by EE.

There are category variables, but they must be inside the {categories] variable pair.  You should be able to use that to build your links, though, now that you can grab it. =)
