One of the things I really like about Expression Engine is the support. I have posted plenty of questions and received lots of cheerful responses back.

One of the challenges I face though is that some of the questions that I put in How To are just as critical as Technical Support questions, yet, the How To questions don’t seem to be taken as seriously, and they are often left to languish if one person makes a reply, even if it doesn’t exactly resolve the issue.

I would feel a bit sheepish about posting a How To question in the Technical Support forum because EE isn’t really broken, it is just a case of me not knowing how to do something properly in EE.

I would like to get some feedback on this point. As far as the EE support community is concerned is it fair game to post a How To question here or would that ruffle feathers? If it is not appropriate, how can I invite more feedback to those critical How To questions?

    Thanks.

    Hi, Forrest -

We do moderate the forums as well as respond; if you post a question that belongs in How To in technical support - we’ll move it there.  No feathers ruffled, just keeping things organized.

The difficulty here is that our focus is keeping ExpressionEngine sites working, and troubleshooting issues.  How To questions are generally customization questions, “How do I accomplish making a drill-down menu based off categories” would be a customization, not technical support.

If you are finding that you have many questions with how to customize your site using ExpressionEngine tags, or how to structure your site, etc, then hiring a Pro Net member may be a good option for you.  We do try to help out where we can, but our priority has to remain on the technical support side.

You can read more about the forum structure in this announcement.

Thank you for your feedback. I’m going to move this to general as well, and don’t hesitate to email me directly or post with more questions or feedback!
