Can you provide one or more examples of an EE wiki that looks and acts less crudely than a typical wiki?  I’m looking to set up a wiki that will be used to document a city, with pages on various aspects of the city.  Why not use a script built just for wikis? Because the resulting wiki is very ugly and not very elegant in its usage.  I’m hoping to create a site that have the functionality of a wiki, but with a more usable and attractive interface that will help the finish product look more like an online magazine than wikipedia.  The usual wikis just feel so “technical.”

So, anything like this been built?

I suppose I had better ask about the license. Can I allow any user who registers to create or update a page?

I did see the Showcase before, but I was hoping there were some others that were more sophisticated than those.

Is there specific functionality you are looking for, or is just about interface and presentation?  Because with the ExpressionEngine wiki, you control 100% of the markup, CSS, Javascript, etc. in your wiki templates.

Let me try a different angle.  I am evaluating using a Wiki for a city site, where people would write up pages on various locations, organizations, activities, etc of the town.  The problem that comes to mind first is that every wiki I have ever seen just simply looks so “techie” and bland.  Now, I understand that I can use EE to make it all more attractive.  But, what is it like in EE for a user to create a page?  Is there (can there) be a semi-wysiwyg interface to enter/edit pages? At least even a way to insert images, bold text, create lists, etc without enter codes around text like most wikis?

And regarding the presentation of information, can pages be organized into category/subcategory/... levels? and placed into multiple categories.  In other words, something similar to a comprehensive article management script.

If you search these forums, I think there are some posts from community members describing how to add WYSIWYG editors like TinyMCE to the Wiki.  I’d personally prefer using something like Markdown or Textile, which while it still uses syntax, is incredibly simple when compared with HTML or the obtuse syntax of Mediawiki.  There are even some Javascript toolbars out there for Markdown and Textile so your users can click a formatting button instead of having to remember the nitty gritty.

Oh, and yes, articles can belong to multiple categories, and categories can have children.  Categories syntax
