at the moment I’m hosted on shared hosting, which has been fine, but alot of people have told me that they were unable to view the site due to CPU isssues.  so I called my host and they told me I should upgrade to a dedicated server, which is going to cost quite abit.

My site is only a personal site, but I’m running multiple weblogs on it.

so my questions are, what hosting are other people with sites like mine running, and what do I really need to look into a virtual private server or a dedicated server? thanks

Your host is trying to pull a fast one I believe. Your shared server shouldn’t have any problems running your website, unless your host has allocated very little resources for it or exhausted the maximum number of sites on it. Enginehosting has been great. Also there are a few threads around on different hosts with differing opinions. There are also a few other Aussies here that might point you in the right direction

If you could give some detail about your traffic, I’m sure the users here can give you some good recommendations, there’s not really enough to go by based on what you’ve said so far.  But my initial reaction is being suspicious of your host saying that you needed to get a dedicated server.  Perhaps in their network you would need that, which would make their statement true for them, but I too often see sites that have no need for dedicated servers or even VPS being sold on to it, because the host’s shared hosting environment is overcrowded and/or not tuned for PHP/MySQL applications.

Thanks,  yeah I had a feeling they were trying to do something sneeky.  I’ll have a look and Engine hosting and see what they are like 😊

If your host doesn’t already have some sort of stat tracking package or rudimentary statistics on # visitors, hits, etc. in your hosting control panel, you can install a tool like Analytics or Mint to help you analyze your traffic.

I’ve just installed Analytics, so I’ll post again when I have a good idea of the traffic
