I’m not trying to make a profit this time, I just want to be able to try mosso, but can’t afford it. any way delete the post the idea is scraped, and kill me now, delete my account do what ever u like cause I’m in such a bad mood with my whole life. I give up with CI. It was a waste of time, no use at all to me. I ain’t going back to school for sixth form, no point life hates me, I have no mates. I live in me room, never go out, im am a boring person with no life so kill me now!

I’m OK now, will never mention WackyWebs.net again. I’m shutting it down it will never work.

From Now on im Plain Old(Young) Tom Glover.

Did the powers that be change your user name from Wackywebs to Tom Glover?

    Edit:

Holy horse trots batman.  Anyone can change their user name in the control panel.  That is a bad feature to have enabled from the standpoint of managing a forum.

Your member id and username do not change, but you can change your screen name.  It’s an optional feature of ExpressionEngine that we choose to leave enabled.  It hasn’t ever caused us any problems; it’s not like you can hide from your post history.

You can appear to hide from your post history or at least muddle the appearance.  Perception of reality is all that matters.  I see problems in the future.

In the advanced search screen the option is given to “Search by Member Name”.  Is this member name the same name that is displayed as “Author” or screen name as you put it?

These forums have been operating for years on two large communities and again, it’s never caused a problem.  Yes, the search by member name is the same that is visible next to your posts.  Where’s the problem?

    Here is one scenario.

There is a popular forum contributor who people follow and reference.  This contributor has a couple of thousand posts.  This contributor is something of a celebrity.  Other sites link to the posts and reference the poster by name.  In one swift motion the poster can ruin the reference points on potentially thousands of sites by changing their screen name.  The same can be said for the title and contents of posts.

For instance a blogger writes an article about “Derek Jones” who unbeknown to the blogger has changed their screen name to “Monkey King”.  The blogger links to a post written by Mr. Jones.  The person reading the blog reads the article and then clicks on the link.  There is now no reference to “Derek Jones”.  This is bad.  The blogger looks foolish and the continuity of the CI forum is now in question.

Consider that a google search of codeigniter.com for Michael Wales returns 1,500 + hits.

I can see where that thought could come from and it does make sense, but you have to weigh the pros vs. cons. When I first joined I was ‘walesmd’ but decided pretty early on I would have ‘Michael Wales’ visible here. A quick blurb in my signature (plus the unique and easily recognizable avatar) alleviate any confusion for the most part.

There was an instance, a few months ago where an old post was dug up because a new member was confused about something. People were referencing walesmd’s post within that thread and the new member couldn’t figure out what they were talking about. Luckily, another member stepped in and let them know walesmd == Michael Wales.

All in all, yeah - it can cause some minor issues. But, I think the benefits of being able to change display names is well worth it.

I don’t see any problem too about that, on a forum people are used to follow recent posts, old posts become obsolete within 2 or 3 months maximum.

I join also you Michael on this point. I register my forum account 2 years ago with the screen name “elitemedia” that was the name of my company. Since then things evoluted and my company is now named “Too Pixel” so I was happy that I could change my screen name. Also, if I search for posts about my old screen name, I find them all, where is the problem then?

I capitulate for now.  This forum has a solid user base with few if any subversives.  I suppose it is a judgment call based upon the community and EE gives you the option.
