Howdy folks.
I got bored the other day and decided to install (re)install mySQL 5.0 and add 5.1/6.0 instances.
I’m absolutely amazed at how easy it was to get going (with some wrestling, of course).
MySQL 5.1’s partitioning feature is absolutely amazing. Play with it if you get a chance. 6.0’s replacement engine for isam (maria) is absolutely amazing and the Falcon engine is just unbeatable.
When doing some test, I created a test db with 50,000,000 rows of data and selected it into a new test db. How long did the query take?
Less than 1 second. Wow.
Granted, the dataset for the test table wasn’t huge, it was lightening quick.
I also attempted to crash the falcon engine. Nothing I did would kill it.
Copy 500,000,000 rows of data from 1 DB to another and physically unplug the machine in the middle of it? Falcon starts back up and finishes where it left off.
The Maria engine is quite amazing at autorecovery too. Took a bit longer than falcon did, but it still finished the job.
That’s my random blurb for the day. If any of you want to play with MySQL 5.1/6.0, let me know. I can give you the steps to get them setup as separate instances or you can abuse my own installs.
