piwik is an open source (GPL license) web analytics software. It gives interesting reports on your website visitors, your popular pages, the search engines keywords they used, the language they speak… and so much more.

piwik aims to be an open source alternative to Google Analytics.

    Looks promising.

I found it a few months ago, never installed it. Found the link again while wading through my delicious bookmarks.

Nice but not yet cutting the mustard in its attempt to be an alternative to GA - good luck to them though.

I thought about trying them out but haven’t installed yet. Definitely not as much information as GA, but honestly I don’t need that much information and sometimes feel like I’m getting information overload with GA. I need something simple. I’ll probably give them a try whenever I get a chance.

I was thinking of trying them.

Yeah, everyone says that Mint is really good too. I think it definitely looks better than Piwik, but with Piwik there’s the free factor.

Yeah, people say that about WordPress too, or Drupal, and yet, look where you’re posting. Ha! You get what you pay for (often). And Mint seems to be fairly cheap.

I’ve been thinking of getting something like this, or setting up Google Analytics.

Right now I use Analog, but I have to manually download my log files every day, and I have no real idea about optimal configurations, etc. And it’s nto real time, which for me is only a geek factor thing.

    That’s a good point. 😉

I tried all kinds of free CMS’s before I found EE and would never go back to anything other than EE unless it was a last resort.

Yeah, Mint is only 30 bucks a license which is very reasonable. W3Counter is very good too and inexpensive but when I was with them they were gaining all kinds of new users and experiencing quite a bit of downtime so I canceled. I loved their interface and everything though.

Well, I went and installed piwik on all of my sites. Between awstats, Google Analytices, and slimstats I figured one more package doesn’t matter…

Piwik is clearly mimicking GA’s look and feel. It doesn’t have all of GA’s features, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I have minor issues with the user interface, but nothing I couldn’t live without. I like it very much that I own and control the data, as opposed to Google. I dislike the way piwik is instrumented; I’d rather have a PHP include in index.php like slimstats rather than the JS solution both piwik and GA use. I haven’t looked at their plugin API and how easy it is to write your own plugins, but at least the option is there.

All things considered, I’m still looking for a one-stop analytics package. I like to look at awstats for a mile-high view; slimstats (or mint, if you want to pay for it) is good to display real-time activity, GA and to a lesser degree piwik are good for a more elaborate analysis. GA is overkill for my needs and I have trust issues; sooner or later I may ditch GA in favor piwik.

As always, YMMV. Whatever floats your boat, eh.
