[New user] Recommendations for an XP development box server?

Hi,

I’m a new EE user, and want to solicit some advice on setting up a local development box that would be used to set up a site(s) before uploading to a hosted environment.

I’m thinking, and have heard, that XAMP is the way to go (http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html).

Are there any negatives to this package? Any recommended alternatives?

I’d like to follow the KISS principle as much as possible and get up and running fairly quickly.
