I want to purchase expression engine and the msm to manage out own and our client websites.

I take it from the information available on the site that each of these sites can sit on a sperate domain, provided they are all on the same server, this is fine as we own a MediaTemple DV 3.0 server.

What’s the deal though, do I install Expression Engine and the MSM on a master domain and manage them all from there, or does Expression Engine need to be installed on each domain I want to use?

    Thanks in advance.

    Greetings, Ryan,

As per our license, you may not use ExpressionEngine to host sites for third-parties.  Your client’s sites will need their own full license and separate installation.

If you, or our clients, have your own needs for the MSM, then ExpressionEngine would be installed at a central location that all of the other domains could access.  It is a single isntallation, not separate ones.  You can read more about how to setup the other domains in the MSM Documentation.

    Ok, thanks for that.

Some clarification on the licensing though.

We are a contract publishing house who’s main business in B2B print magazines. For some of these magazines we produce an online version, for example InTouch

We own the internet property itself, including the domain, hosting and the content, which we write in house. So in every sense, we own these properties, even though they are branded to the client.

Does this situation still call for seperate licensees? If so, that’s fine - I just wanted to make sure.

    Thanks again.

    Hi, tigercore -

It would be best to email sales to discuss this in depth.  If you can explain a bit more about the client/design separation in the email, that would be great.  Here is our contact form.

    Thanks!

    Hi Ryan,

My company is initially thinking to use Site manager to do the same thing like you described.  It will be cool to be able to use one instance of EE to manage all client sites.

Unfortunately, I don’t think this is what it is intended to do.  It is best suited to manage site with number of sub domains like a university campus with different departments as they all share a common user group…etc All sites share one single database and most information are visible to the others even though you can limit access.  I also found difficulty to allow a site user to get into control panel without granting access to the master site first. And keep in mind there is no easy way to move a site out of MSM easily laterly on.

If each of your clients’ site is a single entity, it is better of to install them separately.
