    I saw this in forum:
    http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/82585/

I am using IE. Some friends of mine said that Firefox is better.

    But 2.0 or 3.0?

Some say 2.0, some say 3.0?

I have never use firefox before. But i like to try. I want to know:

    1) Firefox better or IE?

    2) if Firefox, then 2.0 or 3.0?

Can anyone explain to me? I dont know technology much. please explain in very very very easy way!!!!

3.0, definitely. There’s not much to explain, it’s just the better browser. And almost everything is better than IE, but that’s a different story.

As Ingmar says Firefox is better than IE for almost everything. The only reason I could see some people staying with Firefox 2 instead of migrating straight to 3 would be the many extensions available for the older version. There are a lot of them around and some can make your life as a developer a lot easier (depending upon what you do of course)[ and some have not been converted for use with Firefox 3 yet. They probably will be in due course though so Firefox 3 would be your best bet, yes.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

Firefox 3 is DEFINITELY better. No question about that. On the other hand, check out Opera 9.51. It’s a friggin’ sweet browser.

Hey, I’ve been using Opera since 6+ or thereabouts. I actually paid for my ad-free copy back in the day. I’m sold 😊

Ingmar gets the bragging rights.. I’ve played around with it there and there, but haven’t actively used it since the 9.x branch. I do have to say that I feel ashamed I overlooked it before.. OP, you should give Opera and Firefox 3 a try and see what you feel gives you the better experience, as your surfing experience may quite benefit from it - especially since you’re coming from IE.

It’s a matter of personal preference, I think. Some people didn’t like it at all, others love it, myself included; all I can say is, try it for yourself.

Personally, I like the way you can configure every little detail (no kidding: I changed the text of the context menu the other day, and added a line), it does not get in your way when browsing and also leads the browser development to some extent: Sure, the others catch up quickly, whenever Opera introduces a new feature there’s a FF plugin to mimic that within the week, but still nice to have a few essentials things supported OOTB (mouse gestures, eg, or speed dial).

My one dissatisfaction with Opera 9.51 is that—in the default theme at least—the forward and back buttons only go one at a time—no drop-down list as in IE and Firefox.

I’m still using FF3 even though I can count on at least one spontaneous browser shutdown each day. It’s that much better than IE.

Hm, I’ve been using the same theme for a few versions now, and it does have it 😊

The thing that always strikes me whenever I open Opera is just how frigging fast the rendering engine is.  JavaScript (jQuery) animations look soooooo good in that browser.

I spend a ton of time running FF3 off of a USB thumb drive, complete with all the web development plug-ins that I use at home.  And yes, all the plugins that I use have already been converted to work with FF3.

Though I DO like IE7 (I know - call me crazy), the flexibility of firefox is just unbelievable.

:shut:  Found it. It wasn’t there by default, but I found it under Customize >> Buttons >> Browser. Unless I’m mistaken, IE and Firefox both provide them by default.

    Thanks, Ingmar.

Just to throw my 2ยข in, FF3 not only is faster, but it’s much better at handling memory. After leaving FF2 open all day, with several tabs coming and going, it was not uncommon to see it taking up 400K in my Task Manager. Since getting on with FF3, its stays below 200K. All the extensions I use (firebug, webdev, colorzilla, measureit and screen grab) all work.

Opera is nice as well. I use it to just surf. I don’t mind IE 7. Running IE 8 as well, both are certainly a lot more problem free than IE6 ever was.

And, as a Mac guy, gotta say Safari is fine and dandy as well.  :cheese:

I have used FF since 1, Opera since 9 (tried out before, but didn’t like it), safari since 3 and IE since.. well windows 3.1 was my first OS. (I used Netscape some time, haha)
And although I find Opera faster and lighter than any other, FF3 does offer better features for me, and they do concentrate on the little details that makes my geek part say “niiiice”.

The ability to use spell check by simply add a dictionary, a better “find” tool, more customizable panel (having the menu, buttons, address bar in the same bar).

Little things, like asking to remember passwords with a top bar, while you keep browsing instead of stopping the transfer and asking you with a pop up window.

And the little spark at open source seduces me.

So I still use Opera a lot, I still have it as default browser, but I hope that FF improves some more and I wont even think about it. I also use FF in any place with the portable apps suite.

    Cheers!
