Since launching my new member site a few weeks ago I’ve received all kinds of member signups. Most of these members are still in “Pending” status. I’m wondering how long you allow a member to be “pending” before you delete them from the system? Some of them are easily spotted as spam, but some are not.

Don’t know how many you have, but they really aren’t hurting performace, or anything. I generally clean them out once every quarter or so. Not a priortiy issue for me.

    Ok, thanks!

I think I’ll take the same approach that you’re using. 😉

Unless the confirmation e-mail bounces, I leave them alone for 30 to 90 days (depending on my mood, and how long it’s been since anyone signed up).

Past that, they’ve almost certainly forgotten about having signed up, and I figure they’re either not coming back, or if they do they’d be more likely to try to register again than to try to log in.

In a similar situation. Lots of sign ups, many remain in pending status. During our test phase we identified that some email addresses (hotmail, aol and tiscaliUK) had issues.

We worked out most of the problems, including changing the email setup to conform to Hotmail’s buggered up interpretation of spf.

We now post on our registration pages that if you dont receive notification in 12 hours, contact directly, otherwise we will send an automated response, if that response bounces 3 times we delete the account.

Wouldn’t it be possible to create a new member group, move these to this temp group, send out an email to these members that says something like, “If you are still interested in myverycoolsite.com, please complete the registration process. If you did not receive an email with a link to do so please email me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).”

Just an idea, never really had this problem.

“Pending” is a group of their own anyway 😊 So, yes, you can do that.

Heh, yeah, but I like to make things more difficult! I didn’t really think it through, since the few time I have run sites (not currently doing so) with “members” they were all friends in real life as well, so it was a non-issue. Just seems to me people could be getting rid of potential members if they just deleted the pending members. If a spam filter caught the EE mail (it happens), and the site admin just deleted my account request without warning, well, I wouldn’t think too highly of such a site.

But then I guess if it was 90 days later I probably really wasn’t interested.

Yes, but what I meant is you could send a mail to all pending members, warning them of the impending cleansing, as it were. 😊

I got this. Which was why I was saying I like to make things difficult. No need to create a second group. Once I thought through what you were saying it made sense.

I think it also makes sense to send the email, but then I’m not faced with this problem. Just seemed like a cool way to pick up another few members rather than just deleting them.
