Feel free to move to The Lounge or How To if it would work better there.

So you have google Adwords, you have digg and reddit, so what else is out there? If you were wanting to try to get the word out about your site, where do you make sure you’re showing up? Stumbleupon? de.licio.us?

What’s the best way to promote your site on the cheap or free?

    Christopher,

Just do a lookup on social bookmarking and you’ll find a TON. To name a few, Del.icio.us, Technorati, Stumbleupon, FURL, reddit, Slashdot, Simpy, Diigo.. I don’t know them all, but those seem to be on the more popular side of things.

If you happen to have any recommendations, please elaborate as well. 😊 Oh, and there’s also weblogs.com, but I don’t know whether that’s still popular or not.

Well, I was also thinking things like trying to get listed on one of the Gawker media sites, or Boing Boing, or Daring Fireball, etc. depending on your subject matter.

I didn’t want to just concentrate on social media sites, but also other ways to promote a site.

I’ve been googling my heart out for the last few days.

The irony here is I didn’t want traffic to my site (at least not of any substantive level), until I had more content there. Now I think I have enough going on there to take the traffic.

Oh, and I was going to check out your site, but didn’t se one listed under your profile.

To get on those sites, what you will need is all content. Those sites reference and source material as do any other blog. So make sure you get yourself on sites such as Technorati to build up as much backlinks as you can to expose yourself and just generate some good quality content.

After that, it’s a waiting game. In the mean time, you can look up on SEO optimization and go about your code to see what you can improve on. I’ve heard some great results just from people playing around with their heading tags and such, so who knows how significant your page rank can get just by doing so.

Getting onto Gawker or something is great, but what if you can become greater than Gawker? So I suppose you should have a goal in mind to achieve and look to overthrow some of these sites.. 😊 But in the mean time, obviously getting on such a large scale network would be excellent for exposure!
