I don’t know if this is an EE thing or a FreeForm thing, but I have a form on a site using FreeForm and I have the notify=“email address” set up correctly. When we fill out the form, it goes to the thank you page, but the notification email never makes it to the email address in the notify variable.

The site is being hosted in house and the email server is not on the same box as the site. The server guy set up the email configuration in the Admin, but I’m not sure if it’s set up right. I’m just a designer, so when it comes to technical server stuff, it’s a little out of my element, but I told the server guy I’d ask about it.

I seem to recall that there actually was a a bug with Freeform and sending mail. It might have been fixed in the meantime, best to check in Solspace’s forums. I don’t think it’s an EE issue—at least, if you can otherwise send mail fine?

I thought it might be a FreeForm thing, but I tried to send an email from the Communicate section and it gave me an error message saying it couldn’t send the email at this time.

This is the errors I’m getting when I try to send an email from Communicate. I changed the email addresses below.

Enable Email Debugging is turned on in the Expression Engine. Is that what you are talking about?

In the Expression Engine mail setup page,  If I enter the local ip address of the exchange mail server which is a in the same domain as the webserver, and fill out the Communicate page the page will hang and then display the following…

“CGI Timeout
The specified CGI application exceeded the allowed time for processing. The server has deleted the process.”

Man- can’t find anything on that particular error number.  Do you do definitely need to run via smtp server?  Otherwise, I might give phpmail a try.  Wouldn’t hurt to see if it works, anyway.

That worked! I setup PHP.ini with the following info and told the expression engine to use PHP mail instead of smtp.

[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
SMTP = mail.domain.com
smtp_port = 25

; For Win32 only.
sendmail_from = .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Hm- glad that works- works ok for Freeform as well?  (It should.)  And is this going to work for the site?  I’d be tempted to ask the server guy if he knows why SMTP wasn’t working- and if it matters.

What do you think- want to leave this open for a bit, or go ahead and close it out?

I am the server guy. From what I can see the Expression engine has a bug or I configured it wrong. The exchange server never gets an smtp connections from the web server.

You can close it if you like. All is working fine.
