Any known performance issues with EE and a caching proxy like Squid?

I’m trying to help diagnose possible server/performance issues and I know the client is making use of Squid caching proxy. They have a number of production servers, and I suppose squid routes traffic and caches content or something like that. This is the first I’ve ever heard of it.

My question is: is it possible something like Squid may interfere with any EE-based caching (tags, templates), or may interfere with anything EE may be doing? I get 40-second+ load times on some pages that should be 1-4 seconds, tops. I would think if Squid is in place and it was actually working…I’d never see a 40 second load time on a page (which I just experienced on their site).

I’m more of a front-end guy, so if I get too deep in the server stuff, my head starts swimming.

About a month ago we started getting reports that the EE side of our site is not loading for people accessing through a Squid proxy.  The error message they get is that there is an unsupported form of compression being used.

We’re still running 1.42, but we can’t upgrade for the time being.

    Anyone else encountered this?
