License/upgrade questions

I did have a question on the EE upgrade to 2.0.  Now, I own a copy of 1.6.3, duly purchased almost a year ago. Unless version 2 is released before July, I’m going to expire (thus, I presume I will lose support as I doubt 2 will be out before July).  I know the FAQ says current owners won’t lose out on the upgrade price, and that we should upgrade our licenses and won’t lose out.

My question, which I don’t know if it has been addressed is this:  Should I renew my support account or just wait to upgrade?  I guess my thinking is that if I were running the personal version and upgraded to Commercial, my one year would start from the time I upgraded to Commercial (I presume this is the case).  If that’s the case, and my one year of support starts at the time of my upgrade, then when I upgrade to 2.0, I’ll restart the clock and become supported for one year again, whether or not I have a current support account at the time of my purchase of 2.0.  Is this correct?

I think that is likely the case, based on past history of Ellislab.  Now, EE 2.0 is out this summer sometime, not sure when.  What benefit would I get, therefore, for reupping the year support now, if I pay the full upgrade price in a month or two?  My paying the yearly support cost really turns into paying for support only between now and when I buy 2.0, right, since buying 2.0 will re up my service and support based on that date?  Or is this not correct, and the 2.0 update will be treated for support purposes like a point release such as 1.5.2 to 1.6.3 (i.e. not extending the clock at all)?

I guess what I’m asking is why should I purchase the support extension if I’m going to buy version 2 when it comes out?  I can probably live without a month or so of support (though I can always change my mind).  Put another way, what’s the value of a separate support contract with the impending release of 2.0 that I think will give me a support contract anyway?

    I hope I was clear!

An ExpressionEngine license includes technical support; it is not dependent on the download account being renewed.

Does that answer he question? Otherwise, the renew question is answered here. =)

Ha, I saw that page Lisa.  Thanks for the correction on the tech support issue—I suppose that means I’ll always have access to the tech support forums.

So there really isn’t much of a benefit in renewing the download account right now, if I plan on upgrading to 2.0?  It doesn’t appear to be likely another release will be made in the 1.X series.

You can renew at any time, so the choice is up to you, Vanceone.
