    Is there a way to create a special members only section of a weblog.  I dont want people to be able to post (so that rules about members) I just want to restrict access to a certain weblog based on login credentials.

    Hi there,

    There are quite a few ways to do this if I am right on what you want to do and the easiest way would be to just utilise the Template Access Restriction built into the system. Other ways (depending upon exactly what you need to do) would be to use conditionals to do whatever you need.

    {if member_group == "2"}
    Show information or embed a template to Member Group 2
    {if:else}
    Show alternate information or embed a different template
    {/if}

    Hope that helps.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

    Ok this is where I am confused… doesnt the Template Access Restriction limit members to accessing certain templates from the Admin console, rather than seeing specific weblogs?

    Hiya,

    No the Template Access Restrictions don’t have anything per se to do with the weblogs but you can set up for only certain member groups to be able to access certain templates which in turn would hold your weblog tags and so this in turn will limit access in the way that you need.

    The Template Access Restrictions have nothing to do with the Admin part of the site.

    Hope that helps?

    Best wishes,

    I think perhaps we need to step back here a bit. What exactly is is that you would like to do on your site. I was under the impression from your first post that you wanted a section whereby members of a certain member group / groups could log in and see content that you allow them to whereas non-logged-in members and members of other groups would either see something else or get re-directed to another page.

    Is that correct? If so then Template Access Restrictions are your quickest way of doing this. If not what you want then perhaps you could explain again what exactly it is that you are trying to get and we can start again.

    Hope that helps?

    Best wishes,

    You are correct with what I want to do….  but I may be confused by the terminology.  Isnt a member group a groups of users that can edit the weblogs?

    Nope not at all. It depends upon what you wish for a member group to be able to do. You have very fine granular control within a member group to do all sorts of things such as only allowing people to view posts and not edit or certain member groups to be able to post to one weblog and not another and so on and so forth.

    Perhaps the best place to start with all of this would be to read the documentation on Member Groups both here and here (in the first instance) to understand just exactly what is possible with the member groups. I think once you have that understood then the Template Access Restrictions should make a lot more sense after that.

    Best wishes,

    Hiya,

    Just wondering how you were doing with all of this?

    Hmm, so I am back working with this.

    Basically all I want to do is give people access to read a certain section of my website (http://www.varcha.org)... so basically there would be a section that is “members only” and then they would see a new page of members… they could then read a special members only weblog.

    Is your method the proper way to achieve this?

    There are numerous ways. It’s be probably easiest to restrict a whole template to a certain member group only.
