Hey, i’m fairly new to EE and love it from the begining. I have a following question though. I have made several websites with Typo3 CMS, but now i think it’s time to move on, especially because Typo3 is quite a resource hog and there is a ton of bloated code, which i don’t like. Please see the following site, and tell me if something like this can be done with EE (but without extensive php coding)?

Biotehnical faculty, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia

This site has about 1500 sections (or pages), 200+ administrators, who all have limited access to only pages they are authorised to edit, everything in multi language and customized URLs. It only has 2 templates though, one for the pages with content, and one for every page that has the news plugin displayed on (powered by Typo3).

Soon, i will begin making a page just like this one, and i would really like to use EE, because of it’s custom fields and nice source code rendering therefore i have a question for senior developers: Can it be done? (My biggest concern at this point is dynamic navigation)

Oh, and yes, I already have purchased a personal license, to experiment out with EE a bit.

    Hi there Tomaz,

Would love to be able to answer this one for you but can’t as the URL you have provided simply won’t load I’m afraid. If you can get that working then I’m sure that we can take a look for you 😉

Just getting Timeout at the moment. Have been trying for quite some time now on numerous connections and computers.

Just thought you should know incase you were wondering why you weren’t getting any replies 😊

    Best wishes,

    Mark

Hey Mark, it’s working now, you can also check

The Wood department of the same faculty that also has similar structure and some of the pages are actually linked to the first site

    Hiya Tomaz,

First link still not working I’m afraid but the second one does so took a look at that instead. Unfortunately I don’t understand the language so was only really able to look at the layout and so can only make a calculated guess to everything.

Just to say that for the items you have mentioned such as user access multi languages and customized urls then you should be able to manage all of this without too many problems using ExpressionEngine. I would personally use maybe a couple more templates than just the two but that is totally down to the individual though.

From what I have seen though and understood (as I don’t speak that Language unfortunately) I am pretty sure that you should be able to get what you want done in ExpressionEngine and there are a lot of people here who will be able to help you out on your way should you need any help with anything.

I think that when you start using ExpressionEngine then you will see the benefits pretty much right away hopefully as you sound like you are proficient in PHP and so on so hopefully the move to ExpressionEngine shouldn’t be too painful 😊

Let us know how you get on should you decide to go that route and if you need any help.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

Well, the “navigation” or the page tree looks like this

    department 1
     news
     about
     staff
each staff member own page! (200+)
      ..
      ..
     classes
      high
each high class own page (100+)
       ..
       university
each university class own page (100+)
       ..
       ..
      rest
     activities
      pedagogical
      research
      international
      portfolio
     links

And there are 10 departments, so you see the complexity of the navigation. And one more thing, everything has to be in two languages! So you see, to make a dynamic navigation like this is quite a challenge, because i don’t want every menu item to display all children pages at all times. And also, admins must be able to add subpages to te existing ones. So the question is how would i organize EE to display menus, i think i can’t have 1500+ weblogs (or sections for that matter) and if i put all “pages” as categories, then i can’t limit admins to the specific branches of teh page tree.

I hope i was clear on the topic, english is not my native language 😊

    Cao slovenac,
If you need help you will find this community to be quite friendly and if you ever get stuck support from staff is great.
I would not worry about dynamic navigation as long as your organization of content is set.
Perhaps a good starting point would be deciding how complex you site needs to be and what will be your main building block of conent.
    Start of with with http://expressionengine.com/wiki/Category_or_Weblog/
    and relating them:
    http://expressionengine.com/docs/modules/weblog/related_entries.html.
I would imagine that weblogs is the way to go on your scale.
    All the best!
