I was successful in implementing the opt-in form for my weblogs,
(I have multiple weblogs on the site)

What I want is an automated email to be sent out whenever a post is made to everyone on a particular mailing list.

    I tried this:
    http://www.drivingmenuts.net/updatemail.php

But a couple problems, it only allows me to subscribe one mailing list to one blog. Also, it seems like installing this extension crashed the software when i tried to publish a post (I got a php error). So I just removed it.

There is a setting under Weblog Administration ›  Weblog Management ›  Edit Weblog => Notification Preferences => Email Address of Notification Recipient(s)

It would be so perfect if I could put a mailing list name there, so that I could notify the entire EE mailing list that I define. (from the mailing list module)

I have tried some rss-email external tools, although the problem with those are, we want to avoid going out to an obvious 3rd party site and we need to import 100s of emails from the old movable type system.

Any ideas would be helpful. I have searched the forums, and found some posts on the issue, but I am wondering if I can do this someway using the weblog notification feature.

    Thanks!

wpaolo, are you indeed using EE Core? There is no license attached to your account.

The username that has a license is connected to the project manager’s account, but I am the developer. Do I need to log in as her to get support?

Please write to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), with the license number or other proof of purchase. You will then get a “Developer Credit” which entitles you to regular tech support.

Hello, the developer I work with made this post but until his account is connected up for support I decided to go ahead and post this for him. Sorry for the cross post. His username is wpaoli, please go ahead and delete his post if you need to 😊.

    I tried this: http://www.drivingmenuts.net/updatemail.php

This is a third party extension, so I might have to move that to the “Extensions” forum.

There is a feature request for this, but currently it’s not an option. What I have done, on occasion, is use an external mailinglist (Mailman, Listserv, whatever) and used the list address as an exploder. EE then sends the mail to this address, which in turn distributes it to all subscribers.

If that’s not an option, an extension would be the way to go, I think.

I would like to possibly explore this option:

What I have done, on occasion, is use an external mailinglist (Mailman, Listserv, whatever) and used the list address as an exploder. EE then sends the mail to this address, which in turn distributes it to all subscribers.

Can you point me in the right direction?
If I understand this method correctly, we would be bypassing EE’s email list functionality completely, and using a server side email list management tool.

    Correct?

    Thanks

Yes, exactly. At least that’s what I did on one or two occasions. I don’t recall what I used at the time (LISTSERV, I think), but I’d give PHPList a try this time. It styles itself as “a one-way email announcement delivery system. It is great for newsletters, publicity lists, notifications, and many other uses.”

Importing your members via CVS should be straightforward. Also, it should be relatively easy to integrate with other packages, I think there’s even a WP plugin. So, some custom coding will be required, but it should be doable.

I played with PHPlist a bit, and it seems like I cannot actually have an email address to put into the notification field on the weblog preferences. Is there a way to get an actual email address from EE’s ‘mailing list’ perhaps if I use sendmail? for example:

A mailing list with a short name of ‘coffee’ could actually have an email address of .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Would that even remotely work somehow?

No, this has got nothing to do with Sendmail. You might have to install a “real” mailing list application, then. Mailman is quite good, I hear.

Yup! I spent the rest of my day using Mailman, its working out. A bit of a pain to customize, but it will work. Thanks for your help.
