I am posting this because i would like to bring up a problem i have with EE and media temple. A lot of my concerns and experiences were addressed in this post: http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/59156/P0/.

    PLEASE NOTE!

This is not a post to discuss Engine Hosting, Media Temples Customer Service or other hosting options, by the way, I have never used Engine Hosting and I am sure it works well with EE.

I also want to bring up that:

I AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH MT AND I DO NOT WORK THERE!

My main point is to try and identify the issue with EE on media temple and maybe get a resolution for their (gs) accounts. After this, hopefully, gets some good replies and other people that have experienced the same problem(s) recently, I can bring this post up to media temple and we can hammer this out. I love their services and I AM SICK of moving my clients around. I refuse to go anywhere else.

Here is what I have noticed.

    1. WordPress and other dynamic Apps that use MySQL work fine.
    2. When I use EE and try to pull information from the database it frickin dies. I don’t believe that this is a problem with the GS on media temple (not to point fingers) because when i access my HTML website (same directory, same domain) I have zero load time.
    3. That leads me to think that the MySQL server was the issue. Then I ruled it out for the fact that WordPress and other apps work fine.

Other than EE, media temple gs has worked perfectly. I have no complaints about customer service… just EE on gs. Anyone else having issues?

Please try to keep this related to media temple so we can hopefully get some resolution.

I spoke to mt about this issue and they were very upfront with me, they know there is a problem and they are working on it. They also stated it has been an ongoing issue they are trying to resolve. Here is the ticket they sent me. I am not going to leave the reps name just to be courteous.

While he did suggest to migrate to the dv… It is more expensive per month and most people would be upset about being suggested to pay more money for something they already pay for. I don’t, however, think that this is a “solution” to the problem… It is more or less overlooking the issue at hand.

My current plan is to wait for EE 2.0 and test the core version, or whatever it will be called, on the gs to see if maybe the problem lies in the way the EE system talks to the gs. My standard web sites have no issues loading, just my EE pages. Like I said previously WordPress works fine.

Overall my goal is to better the “service” between mt and EE. No matter who you choose to host your EE both companies are potentially losing customers/money by this. I want people who have EE to run mt if they choose to do so. I guess this is my personal “little” goal.

    Jason,

Thank you for the phone call.  Here is a brief summary of our conversation:

You have called in to report that you are having an issue with Expression Engine on the Grid.

You are running into several issues that are happening on the Grid. One would be intermittent MySQL database issues. This is caused by “bad neighbor syndrome” which affects you should anyone overuse the database server.

Another issue you may be running into is overall latency on the Grid. Todays incident is outlined in #393 and also #367.

The quickest solution to your issue would be to migrate to the (dv). This will provide a containerize environment for you and you will not be affected by the issues you are seeing now.

Let us know if you have any further questions regarding your account.

I guess I should have checked on this before I bought my license. I am with (mt) and have just bought my license to evaluate further purchases for my existing clients and future ones - all my clients are housed on (gs) and/or (dv), so this sucks as most can’t afford to move to (dv)...so I would love to help iron this wrinkle out.

I have been messing around with EE on (mt) lately. Here are some things I have come across.

    Persistent vs Non Persistent

I changed the Database Connection Type option earlier this week and I have not seen any major latencies issues. I am not sure what the “technical” difference is between the two connection types, maybe someone can fill me in.

    Media Temple (gs) No Longer?

MT has realized the issues with the GS and they have “come up with a solution”. They are abandoning the GS technology for CS (Cluster Server). Apparently they will be offering a “beta” soon and the release is scheduled for this year. Hopefully this will be more successful…

You can read more here. http://www.mediatemple.net/labs/cs/

    MT Pricing?

I have read on posts that the prices went up with new technology on MT servers. Anyone have any ideas on the possible price changes?

I haven’t seen any problems with my installation. I haven’t messed with my config since my last post so I don’t see any problems arising besides the occasional slow responses from the GS. Which I honestly haven’t seen in what feels like a long time.

Is anyone else having these/similar problems?

OK, well that is my experience too - I have noticed better and better responses on the (gs) hosting, so I’m going to try and place my next commercial project there within a few weeks and test the water.

Crossing my fingers, I can’t afford to have this go belly-up!

Just an FYI, mediatemple grid service is now having huge problems with availability and also latency issues, especially with database-driven websites. My advice is to stay away from it if you have mission critical websites you want to run, but it’s OK for hobbyist sites…but would you pay 20 bucks a month for hobby site-hosting?

What cluster are you on? I’ve just moved from cluster 2 to 4 to alleviate issues and have still got them, so their new architecture isn’t working as advertised. You just need to look at their system incident history to see how many issues are ongoing:

We’ve a few servers on a range of clusters, would need to take a look to remind myself!

I know we’ve got one on cluster 4, it’s not a live site yet but no problems in the development side of things getting access.

Well, that’s at least very good and I’m genuinely happy for you. As for me, I’ve been a loyal and happy customer for years, but it’s probably coming to an end soon as I am looking at a linode 720 instead.

I’m not saying we have had problems but I think we’ve been lucky in having very few issues.

We may also shift the site we’re working on to a different host prior to launch.

Well, over a year and a half since the original post, I am on MT gs with ExpressionEngine 2 and I also have MySQL connection problems… only with Safari (Windows and Mac) and Opera (only tested Mac) - Firefox seems to rip through just about anything as usual.

Every third refresh on my page ends in a blank page.

Temporarily moved the EE site to a host called site5 and had zero problems… go figure, mt is so much more expensive… almost double.

I have just installed the EEbeta for a friend on MT gs for the first time and have the same page refresh issues.
