So I got one of the new iMac’s from last week’s refresh, and I now am need of an external enclosure for my 500GB internal Seagate SATA from my G5.  Anyone have anything that they’d recommend?  I’ve never used enclosures for internal drives before, but my priorities are, in order:

    Quiet
    Pretty
    Fast
    Cool

I see “cheap” “good value for money” didn’t make the list… Sorry, PC guy here. 😊

I’ve never had any problems with any of the Antec enclosures. Mine are P-ATA, but they sell SATA ones as well.
Newegg usually has a pretty good list.

I’d stay away from the $5-$10 cheapies though. And maybe look at a USB and Firewire enclosure, if that’s your bag.

@Ingmar - as I grow older (egad, 30!), I have less patience for gadgets that have things I wish were different, so cost is only an important factor if the item’s price is exorbitant in comparison with comparable products, or if I’m making a decision between multiple very similar items.  Of course, I don’t just toss money left and right, this is only in the case that I’ve already made a determination to buy.

@AJP - thanks for the tip.  I looked at some Antecs, but my ears are very sensitive to fan noise, so I decided a fan-less enclosure would be best.  Which took me to aluminum models for better heat exchange.  In the end I went with Macally’s USB2.0/FW400/eSATA enclosure that looks like a baby PowerMac, for $39 at Amazon.

Ahh, yeah I use the fanless ones. But that macally one looks pretty slick.
