    Hi,

I would like to build a ratings/review directory that will have the following blocks of listings on the home page (maybe three listings/block):

    1) Newest listings

    2) Editor’s Picks (or Featured Listings)

    3) Most Popular

Each listing will have a description, number of views (popularity), rating, number of comments. It would look roughly something like jReviews which is written in Joomla:

    http://demo.reviewsforjoomla.com

I would prefer to use ExpressionEngine for another of reasons (I always appreciated the support that ExpressionEngine provides as well as the sound architecture), but since I do not know too much about the full capabilities, I was not sure how difficult such an undertaking would be. I would appreciate any guidance.

    Thanks.

    1.  Newest Listings
This is fairly simple.  Look into the use of the orderby= and sort= paramters.

    2.  Editor’s Picks
I suspect that using a custom status here would work well.

    3.  Most Popular
I suggest looking into the.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) module for this.  If you actually want to track views of a certain page there are built-in ways to do that.

Most of all, I’d recommend that you take some time out and read the documentation.  It’s the greatest tool to help you build an EE site.  At the very least, you should review the Getting Started with ExpressionEngine and Weblog Module sections.

    Hi,

Thanks a lot for the information. I have begun looking over the documentation. However, I noticed that there is going to be a new 2.0 version of the software pretty soon, and I don’t want to spend time researching aspects of the software that will be significantly changed in 2.0. Is there any description of 2.0 (other than the video), that describes the significant changes? If it is just the administration and user interface, then that would not be a big deal Thanks for the help.

    Hello again Rich,

The preview page that you’ve seen is all the publicly available information on EE 2.0.  From my understanding from what’s been posted by EllisLab staff here in the forums is that there will not be significant changes to the current EE syntax and logic.  The biggest change in EE 2.0 is moving to a CI powered application.  There might be one or two changes that you have to un-/re- learn but for the most part it will remain in 2.0

There will probably be new features but I highly doubt that older ones will be rendered obsolte. Bottom line: EE 2.0 is an upgrade.  You might have more to learn but what you’ve already leared with EE 1.x will still be valid.

Anyone can feel free to correct me if I’m wrong in this understanding.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the info.

So, from your understanding, and based upon what I saw in the preview, Version 2 is more of of an internal engine rewrite, that will enable CI programmers to use EE more effectively, as well as some new UI panels. If there is anything more to it, I would appreciate the info.

    Thanks for the info,
    Rich

That’s all the info that’s publically available at the moment.  I’m sure there will be feature upgrades to things like the templating engine etc…

But I’m fairly confident that I/you will be able to create a fully functional website using your current knowledge of EE only.  Again, there might be more things to learn but things you’ve already learned will still apply.

The biggest change in EE 2.0 will probably be a changed workflow in the control panel.
