I’m going full steam ahead in my drive to build some web design skills. I know I’ve asked several hundred questions over the four years I’ve been using EE, but now I’ve decided to go pro. That doesn’t mean the questions will end, actually they’ll probably increase in frequency in the short term.

However as I get more experience and really focus my energy into learning XHTML, CSS, Javascript, & EE then I hope to move away from being a questioner and towards being someone who can answer questions. Yes I plan to return to the community once I’ve got my web design skills up to snuff.

    My latest twitter tweet goes;

if web design were math, XHTML = addition, CSS = basic algebra and Javascript = quantam mechanics with a dash of super string theory

That’s how it stands for me right now. XHTML seems basic, CSS is a little tricky but with practice should get easy and javascript is like talking to an alien from another universe.

Anyhow - give me some time and I’ll be able to do it all. Until then thanks to everyone for all the help I’ve received so far.

The only thing I can say, is get a basic understanding of how Javascript works, but don’t ultimately do it alone…use a library like jQuery (particularly if you’re going to continue to use EE, as jQuery will be in there by default anyway). jQuery has made my life, and site development, so much easier. Good luck!

    Hiya,

Good luck with everything. Don’t be a stranger now 😉

I know what you mean about Javascript though. I know that my XHTML / CSS skills are quite high up there but Javascript is a definite learning curve for me at the moment. All good fun though.

All the best with everything you do with your new-found skill-set!! 😉

    Best wishes,

    Mark

I couldn’t agree more with Ryan…  a good toolkit or framework will take a ton of pain out of Javascript development.  I am also a fan of jQuery - I was able to start developing useful code (some of which is now deployed) as soon as I started learning it.

I’m in a similar situation, Linguist…  My current contract will expire at the end of the year and I really want to be able to go pro by that time.  I’ve been working like crazy to build up my skills, portfolio, marketing materials, and confidence!

    CSS is algebra? I guess that’s why I’m a C student in CSS too…

Thanks for all the feedback. I’ve been interested in Jquery since I’ve been hearing alot of buzz and that’s why I decided to learn javascript, at least the basics so I can use Jquery as a framework.

There is a site (couldn’t find the link) that shows the progression of it!

WARNING - DO NOT have anything else on in your browser when loading the links below. They could seriously jam up your browser and will probably take a while to load. You have been warned! 😉

They’re a little bit better than that actually. Don’t want to show off or anything but take a look at this then!!

Yes this is just html code!!

    Another one!
I’m in that one above somewhere!! 😉
2nd Warning - If you value your bandwidth then you may not want to look at the links above or view their source code. The first link is just shy of 6MB!!

Did that a while back now. See what you think? 😉

Well I did say it would be big 😉

Not sure what font it would be in though as that is probably set by your browser preferences I would have thought?

Did you get to see the image though? 😊

    Best wishes,

I saved as text and opened in word - FF crashed when I tried to view source. Yeah I saw the image - only took 4-5 seconds to load. Very very very cool.

Well if you don’t like tables I could make them as valid XHTML / CSS if you want? 😉

    Best wishes,

    Mark
