I may have come to this the wrong way around—-

I’ve been using EE for a few years now, and am familiar enough with the tagging system that I can take a template and tweak it quite heavily. I’ve built out around a dozen sites, blogs and forums - the most recent being a 30 page website with heavy membership restrictions.

But they have always taken their start in a default template.

I’ve now got a project to work on that won’t be more than a few pages in size, just a showcase for a dancer, a small gallery and a calendar really, so I’m thinking this might be the opportunity to learn how to do this whole “design” thing properly. Rather than tweaking a template, perhaps I could build my own.

I’m not pro - I don’t charge for these projects (it’s mostly been personal, friends or non profits I’m involved with somehow), and I’m not quite sure where to start.

Is there some application out there that helps with the web design portion / css styling etc, then I can build out the tags? Is there something out there that assists us newbies from step one, and has tags built in? Any tutorials or websites you recommend?

    Thanks!
    Paul

Digitally render the site in a photo paint program.
You can choose from stock art, photos, etc., look at some photoshop tutorials for some inspiration of something you’ld like to do, a style you might emulate.

Most layouts come down to column spans, two column, three column, varied or fixed width.
There’s been alot about grid layouts lately, but design is anything but lining some text(s) up with a grid.
Figure out what the major design elements of the layout will be, that’s the biggest question always.
