Trackback support is already implemented by EE for weblogs - so one would think that adding support for the forum module wouldn’t be too difficult.

Has anyone done this? .. or maybe suggestions to how it can be done?

I’ve never seen it done and I think it would be a rather large undertaking.

From my personal point of view (ie: not speaking as a staff-person) - I think it would be a waste of time, simply inviting more spam in what is pretty much a failed and dead medium.

What you could do quite easily is use weblog posts that link to forum posts - this is easy and quick to set up out of the box and would give ou the ability to send and receive trackbacks.  The limitation, of course, is that they would not be available at the actual form post.

Yeah I meant sending trackbacks more than receiving them.. so that when someone links to a blogpost in a forum message the blogpost gets a trackback request from the ee forum.

    So, no spam-bait there 😊

It’d be a nice way to get more incoming links automatically.

Well, it would take some sort of extension or similar to add the trackback field and then somehow call the trackback module to send the trackback itself.  It seems to me like the return wouldn’t be worth the effort, but I haven’t investigated the difficulty of adding this, so I can’t really say. =)
