I can’t stand the firefox 3 UI (though it’s much better than firefox 2)...I use Safari myself, it has a much better UI…but anyway..

    I use MAMP, MacVim, CSSEdit

I’ve found Coda has been really helpful.  Was kind of expensive but uses Transmit as its FTP/SFTP client and its ability to sync your local and hosted files is really nice.

I’m just a CI newbie and my PHP experience consists of spending the last 9 months modifying an existing application to fit our purposes, so I may not have the ideal setup but FWIW:

I have a MBP that I’m using for development and am using the built-in Apache2 (just turn on Web Sharing in System Preferences > Sharing) but I did not use the standard PHP. It doesn’t have a lot of libraries compiled in and in particular I needed mcrypt. So I went with the Liyanage PHP package for Apache2 and 10.4. (Note that you DO need to make some modifications from the Terminal to make it work if you have a 64bit machine. See: this Liyanage forum post for details.)

I also don’t have Textmate (yet) but do have BBEdit, so I’m using that. I’ve never used version control, so haven’t even thought about that yet - although I probably should.

I downloaded and installed the 64bit version of MySQL for OS X 10.5 and downloaded the new System Pref to start/stop it.

Based on what I saw in the CI blog screencast tutorial, I asked about the MySQL manager that Derek used and found it was CocoaMySQL so just installed that.

Everything is working just hunky-dory so far, (except that if I leave System Preferences running, the MySQL plugin is apparently crashing it for some unknown reason).

I’ve been wondering, are there any benefits to using CocoaMySQL that you don’t get with phpMyAdmin or is it just a personal preference thing?

I’m sure it is mostly a personal preference thing, but for starters phpMyAdmin requires you to change tabs to do different things, which is much more tedious than the CocoaMySQL way. See other people’s comments here: CocoaMySQL Reviews.

There is also a bit of a security angle between having your database administration tool in your web space vs running it as a desktop app. This can be addressed, of course, but is just one more thing you don’t have to worry about if you can eliminate phpMyAdmin.

I just REALLY like the intuitive look of the CocoaMySQL app when I was watching the blog screencast and had to give it a try. 😊

Thanks, I’m about to do some major database restructuring so maybe I’ll give it try (having to change tabs in phpmyadmin is kind of annoying 😉).

Persevere with the Mac Development environment. Yes its vastly different from Windows, but once you get into the flow, you’ll be Apple+Tabbing your way between programs at the speed of light 😊

I spent 10 years on PC and the last 18 months on a Mac, and you don’t realise it immediately, but over time you realise all the hours you’ve spent doing productive stuff instead of running Adware/Antivirus/Defrag programs.

Personally I use Textmate & Transmit, with the Transmit Bundle so I can use shortcuts to upload my files.

Also I use DWCS3 for maintaining the company websites. No gripes whatsoever. ( well one tiny gripe theres no # key, I have to press alt+3 )...

There’s a great one in /Applications/Utilities called Disk Utility. You put a CD/DVD in and use Disk Utility to make an image file out of it. Stick in a writable disk, and burn.

Two recent additions to my workflow have been Quicksilver (although I have mixed feelings about it) and Visor. Both are available from BlackTree for free. I’m also tempted by Expandrive, which makes SFTP stuff really striaghtforward.

    dear nick,
i am using this way to copy discs for myself already, thank you! A friend of me is really noob user and needs something as
    - put disc into the powerbook
    - software says “start copy”... “insert target disc”...

Do you have any hint, I am still browsing thrue the apple homepage but i hoped to get a recommendation from the ci-forum (as I do get so often, thank you forum 😊

I recommend VirtualHostX, that is a very useful app to configure many virtual hosts on your local host no matter in seconds.

Also, I’ve made modifications on hosts file (located in /etc) setting up my dynamic hostname. This is an easy way to preview and explore websites for me and the clients using the same host (e.g. using only mydomain.no-ip.com).

Previously, I’ve used ‘localhost’, ‘192.168.0.1’ and ‘mydomain.no-ip.com’ and I had to deal with different settings on config.php to develop or to make a preview.

When I move the project location from a subdomain folder to root some CI projects could make a little trouble, that is another reason that I like to work by default with virtual hosts.
