    Take a read: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article3689881.ece

I gotta tell you, I’m not so sure I’m keen on the idea of cloud computing for my own personal desktop and files… Am I the only one here with a fond loyalty for the good old desktop based operating system?

I like to think that in 10 years we will look back on that article and laugh our asses off about how far off the CERN guy’s suppositions are, just like we do every time some scientist spouts off about something he only uses for work… And before you think I am some crazy person who thinks scientists are miniature devils, I am working towards a degree in Physics 😉

I wonder if open source can really become obsolete.  As long as you can cobble together a computing device (open source hardware hacking) and write code (open source software hacking) which will run on that device then you can create whatever environment you like.

Microsoft Windows on the other hand…

no way… i’m for the personal pc!

Better to have something physically in your own house, than rent and have it unreliably streamed through the internet!

The richies though would prefer us to rent and rely on us as a daily source of money, and this wouldn’t promote progress!

In the case of desktop PCs and laptops, the economy needs to replace old ones with new ones to refresh the market so it doesn’t saturate. With renting the market doesn’t have the same risks so it doesn’t need to upgrade their offerings, ie. internet. 😊

    Desktop OS for me.
    a. If my internet is out I still want to boot up and play some games.
    b. I know for me it would be tempting to rearrange someones desktop icons so I can see someone else wanting to do the same. I for one am very picky about my desktop icons and where they are at.

Roaming profiles exist longer than today. I read a lot of articles about home servers over the period of a year. Why not leave the maintenance up to the people that have years of experience. I think the only thing that is stopping this is the perception your internet connection can break but i think that could be solved by joined provider accounts to create parallel connections.

Content providers will need to have regional servers to provide the fastest connection to your files. But think of a code provider that offers a development environment you need by clicking a few checkboxes. A lot of projects already have subversion servers so their source code is online already.

What makes my live easy are the applications i run not the OS, most functionalities of the OS’s are interchangeable. As a webdeveloper i rather learn about maintaining a server than keeping my OS running.

For entertainment i would love to connect to my files on every computer, cellphone, tv, stereo-installation, ... . I just saw this weekend a video where a quake game was played on an iphone by moving the device and tapping the screen.
