Hey guys,

I’m starting this website which is also supposed to be part ecommerce (yeh, I’m broke and need to pay my beer lol),

unfortunately this is the first time a face ecommerce and there are probably some experienced developers around here that can throw me some knowledge 😊

I’ve done some research and found some basic keys: address verifyer and payment gateway.

The problem is that with all the vagueness I encountered I really don’t know what payment gateway to use.

I would be really happy if somebody could advise me, even not gateway related! :D

Your clients dont have to have paypal acoounts, and they only charge pennies to make sales.

Have them get an merchant account & authorize.net transaction gateway.

Use the latest CIM integration utility with authorize.net and you don’t have to worry about storing sensitive data on your server.

Paypal is another option, but if you want to be more professional, you should have them get the payflow pro which is another merchant gateway.

I have used the authorize.net solution from small mom & pop startups to major political candidate donations via website to fortune 1000 payment transaction gateways so I know it works well.  They also have excellent docs and a great support team.

You can get a free developer account if you hit there site and fill out the form.

btw I didn’t know that users don’t necesssary need a paypal account to pay for themselves, sounds very nice, maybe if I’m in super hurry I’ll just use them for the simple plug-and-play style of the service. 😊

Omg please don’t use Paypal unless you really have no other choice. I had a big eCommerce site to make using it and it just gave me headaches.

There sandbox system just is crap and is a total pain in the behind. Then they decided to upgrade the sandbox without telling anyone, lets just say it broke for about 1 week and no-one did anything to fix it.

I am never using paypal again I have to say for automated payments. Its just not worth it, even with the PayPal CI library.

paypal now way, have had three accounts with them , all of which shut down, due to one reason or another. you try and restore access, and it doesn’t work because it says you have to do the other thing first when it requires the one your trying to do!

It is so annoying, at the moment i have a lot of money trapped in paypal which they wont release, until the account is sorted(4 hours on the phone probably).

If you can afford to have a merchant account and pay for a merchant gateway then I would strongly recommend that. Every decent sized company I have come across has used Authorize.net . If you cannot afford to use a merchant account and gateway then I would say use PayPal for now until you can afford the real deal. Once you can afford a merchant account and gateway then I say you should offer both. I for one use the money in my PayPal account as my play money and I would like to say more than just me thinks that way, however I don’t have a study showing that other people also think that way.

Thank you for dispensing advise based on your experience, I’m new to all this so it’s like running naked while blindfolded for me 😊

I will look into Authorize.net more and think 10 times before getting a PayPal system. I will hopefully close a good gateway deal when the time comes.

I did find a merchant gateway and account from a hosting company for only $24.99 a month with very low rates, but at the moment I cant remember where I found it. when i do i will post it here.

Am sorry guys, but saying “don’t use paypal” - puuuh, honestly - I could not afford to throw it away - acceptance is too high.

re: “don’t use paypal.” If you can afford it, services like Authorize.net are better to deal with than Paypal. I’ve had numerous clients attempt to use paypal that have run into problems with their accounts where their money was frozen for months until something was straightened out. Basically, on several occasions people attempting fraud, fraudulent chargebacks, or malicious eBay disputes caused havok with my clients’ Paypal accounts. For a consumer, Paypal is great, but Paypal’s assumption seems to be that consumers, rather than merchants are in the right all the time. Not saying that there isn’t a time and place for paypal, but for thousands of $$$ / month, a service like Authorize.net offers better piece of mind.

I wrote an authorize.net gateway once… I really should post it up one of these days.

I know everyone is anti paypal here, but has anyone who was cancelled using the payments pro service rather than the free one?

This was posted on Allen Stern’s blog Centernetworks (Allen is the Mike Arrington of the east coast) this morning - it’s pretty relevant if you are considering Paypal.

I would recommend (depending on your location):

- WorldPay
- Protx
- Google Checkout

Interesting posts and totally agree, the guys who do the UK support on PDN are pretty quick to respond when Ive had any issues. Comments the one 3 suggested by Swanweb.

Wordpay - There ok they take a while to setup and hold on to your money for 30 days so uncool. Plus there API sucks.

Protx - Requires you to have IMA with a business bank, so theres high costs and upto 3 months to get said IMA.

Checkout - Rocks, until you realize you have to pass the customer to google, they create an account and then they get passed back to you.

Why am I looking at Paypal, because they offer something called direct payment / payflow gateway which allows you put the capture page into just about anything including things like a CRM system etc.
