Custom Fields - multiselect or checkboxes

I have the need to associate a weblog entry with multiple categories (categories in general, not categories in the EE usage). I don’t see any way to give the user the option to do this, short of having them type out all of the related categories and processing them from a string. Is there a way to create a multiselect field, or even a group of checkboxes in the control panel for weblog entries?

    Thanks,
    Gary

Hi, Gary - there are some Extensions for checkboxes and multi selects - by Mark Huot.  Those would be the way to get that working now.

So, I got that working for categories. But I also need to generate checkboxes(drop-down list) for a certain weblog. But in the custom fields editor the “Populate the menu from another custom field” doesn’t list the title. Why would that not be there? I think that would solve my problem. Is there another way to dynamically list checkboxes for all the entries in a weblog so an entry can be related to multiple other entries? Only thing I could think of is having another title field and making the user enter the title twice.

    Thanks,
    Gary

There is no way to use Checkboxes in ExpressionEngine, for entries (custom fields) at this time, other than that extension.  Populate from another custom field simply pulls all the entries in the weblog you chose, and lists those items out as the custom field contents. If you have no entries in that weblog, nothing will appear.

Do you just need a drop-down? There is a drop-down custom field type, but if you need checkboxes, you’ll need to use Mark Huot’s Checkboxes extension for now.

This seems just what I need for a project I’m proposing. I guess you are referring to this:

Any way to install that on my current hosted demo, so I can show it to the client?

Not on the hosted demo (due to security concerns).  How feasible would it be to put up a core install and use that to demo the checkbox?

It’s completely feasible; but a bit cumbersome as I would need to demo two installs (need to demo the MSM and tag module as well). Thanks for the quick answer!

Sorry for the trouble, but that’s the way the system is currently setup. I am going to close this one out, if there’s anything else, just start a new thread, thanks.
