While the events giving rise to the nodaddy site didn’t affect me personally, it was the last straw and moved all my domains off GoDaddy.

If you do this, beware: They force you to cancel private registrations and make them public.

I moved my stuff to NameCheap. They work for me. Private registrations are free for the first year only, but renewing a domain and private registrations is still less expensive than doing the same with GoDaddy. Their CP has all the features I care about. They do have a support forum, but I had to look for it—I haven’t needed support since transferring my domains to them.

On a vaguely related note, I run my own primary DNS servers and use everydns.net and xname.org as free secondaries.

UPDATE:  So after repeated attempts to have my password reset, GoDaddy locked my account—again—and forced me to wait for 15 minutes to speak to their tech support—again.  Turns out that any account that has a credit card on file, which I do, is required to reset its password every 90 days.  There’s no warning, of course, my guess is that they assume you’re keeping track of when 90 days are up.  So with GoDaddy you have two options:

1. Don’t keep a card on file, and your login stays good.
2. Keep a card on file and change the password every 90 days.

I opted not to keep a card on file because even though it’s convenient to have when renewing domains, it’s more of a hassle to be locked out of my account when I need to get in.  So in the short term I’ll enter the info in on each transaction and in the long-term I’ll be pursuing another registar.

I’ve registered close to 50 domains with 1&1;and I’ve never had any problems nor any cause to think they were up to such practices.  So, for what it’s worth, I’d recommend them (again).

I’ve been using GKG.net for years. Not really sure what to say except it works, it seems like a reasonable price, and I’ve never had any problems.

Been really happy with eNom (http://www.enom.com). Been using them for a LONG time and though I could probably spend $1 less per domain, I prefer them to others I’ve tried.

I didn’t think I had a problem with Godaddy, but I’m starting to think their site is so hyped it’s usability is going downhill for sure. It was easy to use in the beginning. They start sending emails months in advance reminding you to renew, and I’m probably signed up for specials, which I said in an earlier post to do, to be sure you are getting their communications, having second thoughts, it’s just too much hype for a simple service like registering and renewing a domain.

Enom is for resellers, looks kind of confusing just for a small-timer?

I’ve been with GoDaddy for a long time too. But I’ve never had to change my password. Maybe you need to come up with a long, cryptic password that doesn’t trigger the reset every six weeks.

I like pairnic.com, but then mostly because I host with pair.com, and the integration is nice. I have my .name done through register.com, but only because pairnic doessn’t deal with .name domains.

123reg are pretty good, plus 1&1;(for domain registration don’t get me started on their hosting though…)

I’ve been happily using PSEK.com for a few years now. I pay for a reseller account, and have multiple domains registered with them, and am running multiple EE installs in that account. I’ve had one outage that lasted about 2 hours in my memory (that I noticed).

They don’t have the most dynamic website in the world, but their support has been nothing but fast and prompt (all email based).

I’ve been very happy.

Gandi is good and not too expensive.
Since the change of ownership a couple of years ago, they seem to genuinely care about their customers. Like any service, you need some time to get used to their interface and their way of doing things but they work well and, as far as I can tell, stand clear of dubious practices.

I’ve happily used directnic.com for about 7 years.  Not the cheapest, but has tight self-management of domains, and from my experience, good business practices.

One thing about DirectNIC is that they won’t let you privitize your ‘whois’ info. So I transferred.
