I have a long list of categories and subcategories (30+) which take up a lot of space in the Publish and Edit tabs.

Is there any way to drill down into categories (expand/collapse parents and children) there?

(I’ve posted this as a request on this thread, but it was buried, so I’m hoping there are others with ideas on this ...)

    Have sim prob;
    40+ countries
    50+ states in one (usa).
40+ regions in 1 state (Ca).
    Broke into sep weblogs.
One weblog countries, cat group countries.
Countries each a weblog. cat group states
State regions using colspace Tag module, works reas well, but need more control.

Adding multiple category groups to a weblog with a way to expand/contract may be good…
For now consider a dropdown list to add order-by-custom-field is a thought.

I am considering posting to the job board for a cp mod to have a chained dropdown list.
two or 3 dropdowns connected to category groups maybe.
second dropdown populates from selection in 1. third from selected in 2….
We are willing to pay and release to the community.

EE needs to be able to handle larger amounts of data, ordering by custom field gets it a long way there…but need as you are wanting…

    Well described, Bruce2005.

Even a JS collapse/expand function in the Categories tab would be great ... even if all the nested categories had to be delivered to the browser.

    Posting it tonight.
If anyone reads this and can do, I have a reasonable amount to pay for this and can released to the community.

    a) As seajay says above.
    b} Chained select/dropdown in cp, up to 3 where second/third has multi-select.

Hmmm. I wouldn’t mind being able to “folder” less-active categories in a system like the one proposed, so they won’t display by default, but are available if I want them. For example on my blog I have separate categories for news and comment about elections going all the way back to 1994, and I want to keep them separate from one another for archive purposes.

But that would be different from using parent- and sub-categories, I think—though if necessary for those in particular I could sub- them to an overall “Elections” parent category. And I suppose I could find ways to organize others if this collapse/expand capability made it worth the effort.
