    Hello,

I’ve got a client who wants a web directory of hotels, B&Bs;and trades(wo)men all over the UK, to be searchable by keyword, category and/or location. They want to be able to easily add, modify and remove the items and to display a “featured” directory entry on the front page, as well as “latest additions” and other assorted things.

Is this something EE would be good for? I’ve had a look at directory software but they’ve all seemed a bit tricky to skin and mold, and for the price of them I’d much rather get an EE license.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi, spaceboy - welcome to the forums.

Absolutely this can be done with ExpressionEngine.  You can limit by category, custom field, and status - as well as text searches, to give you the features you want.  The best way to handle this would be by using a weblog with a set of custom fields appropriate to a directory, with each entry being a tradesperson.  You might like to watch my Building Bug Tracker series as most of the items in there could easily be applied to your situation.

And of course, we always recommend giving EE a try!

    Thank you, Lisa!

I’ll be trying it out and I’ve got a few other projects I’m planning to use EE for as well. I wish I had found it sooner!
