    Hello

For web development in Leopard, which of these would be better? Which is more stable? Can I use the same directory for viewing web sites in localhost or do I have to copy the files between Leopard and Windows? Is one product better than the other with protecting Leopard from Windows viruses etc?

    Thanks

I started with Parallels and then when it was time to upgrade I went with the VMWare Fusion crossgrade (which was the same price as Parallel was asking for the upgrade to their newest version).

Both work surprisingly well but Fusion has been more stable and a bit quicker than Parallels was.  But as I’ve never used the latest version of Parallel I can’t say how it compares now.

I think either will work well enough to do the job.  Windows viruses aren’t going to be a problem unless you set it up to have your Mac drive fully accessable to the Virtual machine running windows.  I don’t think its really the place of a piece of software like Fusion or Prallels to protect you from Windows Viruses.  They are both essentially platform agnostic as it is.  (They aren’t just for windows, you can create Linux virtual machines and so forth).  If you are really concerned there is nothing stopping you from installing virus software in the Windows install.

I use Fusion and it works very well. You can network the VMWare virtual machine with your Mac to share files and folders. For local webdev, I use a combination of MAMP and VirtualHostX to set up Apache virtual hosts on my iMac, which I can access via Fusion to do testing in Windows browsers. Overall, it’s been a great set up.

I was happily using Parallels in Tiger but had huge problems when updating to Leopard. Parallels would completely lock up my machine in Leopard. I’ve since switched to VMWare and it seems to work a lot better.

I tried the trial version of Parallels and it gave me an error message when trying to install an OS.

I downloaded the trial version of VMware Fusion and it worked fine. So I’ll be sticking with VMware fusion.

I too prefer VMWare Fusion over Parallels - It seems to me that the system is running much smoother.

Could be, however,  that I’m a little brainwashed by the VM people 😉
