I recently bought myself a new iMac, and loving every minute of it.

I need a little help, or redirection?!

Here is the scenario (on the PC):
    > take photos and transfer them via SD card
    > use PC utility to rename all photos based on EXIF information
    >> instead of Photo-123.jpg, it would become 2008-01-20_02-02-10.jpg (yyyy-mm-dd_hh-mm-ss)

On my new iMac, I have no clue how to go about doing this.

I’ve heard about AppleScript, but couldn’t even tackle AutoHotKey on Windows.

Is there some free/open-source application or tutorial out there to explain how to do this?
What are your methods of batch renaming files?!

EDIT Oops sorry just noticed you mentioned you wanted to rename dependant of the EXIF data. Sorry. Not sure if those programs do that so have listed some that do here at the top 😉

    Hiya,

I use a batch rename utility but for the life of me can’t remember what it is called. Will have a look tonight though.

For now, Versiontracker shows a lot of programs that will do what you are after. Perhaps give them all a whirl and see which you prefer. I’m pretty sure the one that I use is free so will definitely look it up but I do know that it is extremely fast and powerful.

    Versiontracker Links
    Name Mangler
    Name Those Files
    Renamer4Mac
    File Renamer
    File Namer
    FileWrangler
    Speedy File Renamer
    Batch Renamer
    Quick Rename
    File Sorter

You could probably also do something with the Terminal but that’s all a bit above my head and knowledge I’m afraid! 😉

Hope that helps a bit in the interim?

    Best wishes,

    Mark

    Thanks for those link Mark.
After doing a little searching, I think I found what I need. Well, based on its description, as least.

I’ll let you know if this is the one.

    Yup,that’s the one!!!

By default, it names them per my requirements.
I just gotta figure out how to set up albums and the ins/outs of iPhoto.

My photo library is a little over 20Gigs right now, and I think I duplicated everything. haha, oops!
