    I use phpThumb a lot thanks to all of the good info about it in these forums.  There’s something I can’t figure out though - the image quality of my thumbnails isn’t very good.  Is there anyway to adjust that?  I understand that GD2 produces better quality than GD but it looks like we have GD2 and they’re still not great.

    For some applications the quality is fine, but if the thumb is bigger than say 150px you really notice it.

    It all really depends on what size you are down-sizing from I’m afraid. I use it on a few sites and the results are pretty good.

    Sometimes just using some of the extra functions such as sharpening can make an image look much better when down-sampled.

    Do you have any links to the images for people to see?

    Best wishes,

    Mark

    As Mark already mentioned, the parameters and filters you apply to phpThumb can make a big difference. And of course, these parameters as well determine the graphics format that is used for the resulting images - especially the GIF format will bring unintended results sometimes because of the limitations to 256 colors.

    These images are jpgs - it’s like the compression is too high on them.  So I guess to be more specific, I think what I’m looking for is to reduce the jpg compression in order to get higher image quality.  The only settings I have applied to them are a maximum width and height.  I’ve scoured the config file and I can’t find an adjustment for it, but it’s possible that I’m just not recognizing it.  There is quite a bit that I don’t understand in the config file.

    I’d rather not point to them as they are on live client sites and the referring link isn’t complimentary 😊

    Hiya,

    Not a problem with the link. You can always PM if you like. There is a setting for PHPThumb which if you tack on :

    q = JPEG compression (1=worst, 95=best, 75=default)

    to the end of the URL will allow you to set the compression but if you aren’t doing this then I am pretty sure that it automatically sets itself to full quality unless you have un-commented around line 236 which has the following in it?

    //$PHPTHUMB_DEFAULTS['q']    =  90;

    Hope that helps?

    Best wishes,

    Mark

    You can control the quality through the parameters… &q=10 ...No need to muss with the config file…
    < img src=”../phpThumb.php?src=images/disk.jpg&w=200&q=10” >

    Parameter Demos… phpThumb

    Edit-Add: And what Mark said 😉

    I mean that it’s hard to beat you two to the punch and you usually have the answers so I move on to another post to try to help some poor soul 😊

    Ya but the first 4K+ were probably before there was full time staff. My postings have slowed way down simply because there’s always staff online and/or others like yourself helping out. That’s what’s great about this place, always someone there when help is needed. I rarely post if someone is already being served unless I think I can really add to what’s already there (not often) or clarify something. It’s just timing if we happen to post on top of each other. 😊

    PS: What ever happened to Ingmar? He was one of the more prolific posters there for a year or so. Zoomed past me post wise in no time.
