I use the aptana editors for css and js - not for php cause I like the PHP Tools folding feature.
With eclipse I don’t dare to uninstall plugins…

I have EasyEclipse on my Windows XP box with the Aptana plugin, which installed flawlessly. Aptana have produced their 1.1x version recently, both stand-alone and Eclipse plugin, I think anyone who hasn’t looked at Aptana recently will be pleasantly surprised just how far they have come.

The main point of this post is to say, that with EasyEclipse and the Aptana plugin, I fell I get the most of both worlds, I almost feel invincible, though I do keep Notepad++ handy for that quick-to-edit and light-weight feeling.

I just installed a demo of PHPdesigner (http://mpsoftware.dk/) and I must say it looks very good. Coincidentally they use CI as an example in their screencasts, so that’s a big plus! 😉

I’ve been using PHP designer since it was completely free (2005 edition) I currently use 2008. Its a great editor, but there seem to be some wacky errors on my machines that sometimes make it hard to work with. Over all its the greatest IDE I have ever used though. LOADS of features.

@systemsos - I keep Notepad++ on my system (see my previous post on this thread) as well as EasyEclipse with Aptana Plugin, as it is a Java app and slower to load.

Notepad++ is great for those ‘need to do it snappy’ moments.

No need to throw out the baby with the bath water.

    I installed Aptana.

I had it opened for 5 minutes

I felt like I was cheating on Notepad++

    I went back to Notepad++

Its amazing how set in your ways you can get with things at times! I will pursue to try Aptana a bit more today because so many are loving it. What I don’t get is why install it as an eclipse plugin?

I might need some more selling points 😛

For me it’s been KDevelop on Fedora Core 8 for me for a while now ... some of the decent features are the tabs, highlighting, and built-in console.

I used to use Dreamweaver back in my Windoze days, but I don’t really miss it’s features, since I rarely need to do HTML by visualization anymore (most of it is generated by the PHP and viewed in a browser).  The FTP sync was pretty nice, but since I do development on my local machine before sending it off to a remote server, I’ve just learned to live without it and update when the final version is ready.

Debugging could be better, though, with breakpoints, stepping through code, variable watches, etc.  As far as I know only the Zend IDE can do this, though ... is that true?

Second that - especially precious for me since I noticed the ftp synchronizer plugin thanks to this thread.

Just right for those moments when you uploaded your config.php and need to remove localhost from your base_url and set the log_threshold to a value < 4.

    For me.
On Windows (phhht!) I was using PSPad. Not the greatest ide on the planet but plenty of nice little bits and pieces to make working with code enjoyable.

Since my windows box melted down, I am on Ubuntu Gutsy and am using Quanta Plus - real nice. Lots of functionality I have yet to discover and use properly.

Everyone has their favourite and mostly, it is a case of being comfortable working with the interface. Most of us bitch and moan about an editor when first using, but once you learn your way around then it becomes the new favourite.

I’ve been playing around with ExtJS recently so tried out Aptana which works great with code completion, great for PHP too but dunno about the debugging yet.
I use Eclipse for most PHP stuff but if it’s just a quick edit, Notepad++ is my choice.

Zend Studios is great for avoiding errors (automatically checks you code on syntax errors etc.)
UltraEdit ist great for code work - as InType, wich is really small and nice.
Notepad++ is really good and free!

I usually change the IDE depending on the task:
fixing some errors: UE or Np++
creating huge and genius web apps: Zend or PHPDesigner08

Dont’ forget for testing and debugging, not only does EasyEclipse provide debugging tools and a PHP preview browser (very handy), but the Aptana plugin (and stand alone) integrates with FIREBUG, a fantastic, feature rich (and free) FireFox plugin.

What more can you want? AND ALL FOR FREE.
