My company is in the process of evaluating several CMS soutions. One critical item is if we can search text within a pdf, how it works, is it an EE add-on, and where can I find out more detailed information.

Good afternoon, parastudio - welcome to the forums!
As far as I am aware, there is not such a module at this time. You could probably build one using our Development API or hire someone to do so for by posting on the Job Board or contacting folks through our Professionals Network. =)
