Pings are things you send to let a site know your site has new content; they’re not exclusive to Wordpress, not even close.

Pingbacks are an older school thing that I never grokked, but they were fairly widely supported for awhile; I know pMachine supported them.

I’m not sure what you’re thinking of that is exclusive to Wordpress though, fizzlogic.

I don’t know if Wordpress automatically sends trackbacks now or whether that would make sense.
You probably don’t want to track- and pingback the same blog in one post…

    Wordpress Glossary.

    Ping:
Generic term referencing the two below

    Pingback
Pingback automatically tries to send a pingback-ping to all URLs in your post.

I think trackbacks are a great idea; unfortunately, as everyone here has agreed, the protocol has been horribly exploited by the spamholes of the interwebs. That said, I think the answer comes in the implementation. We’re working on a kind of adaptation of trackbacks that hopefully provides value at both ends of the relationship, while putting in a small barrier to mitigate the spam. Barring any other issues, this use of trackbacks will (hopefully) be a key part of our blogger outreach efforts.

Once we get this all worked out, I’ll be happy to post about it here, assuming anyone’s interested. We’re certainly not reinventing the wheel here or anything, but maybe it will help others figure something out. Sometimes it’s just about looking at it from a slightly askew perspective!

Heh, yeah…I meant “pingback”. I guess I was only correct on the distinct difference between a trackback and pingback.

Trackback is a waste of space.  Too much spam, too little legit use, and a failed standard.

    Ditto.

It used to be a good idea that worked, now it’s just a good idea that won’t do anything worthwhile for most sites.
